Swing States poll: Romney and Obama tied; Gingrich trails.

Republican presidential hopeful Mitt Romney essentially ties Barack Obama in the nation's key battlegrounds, a USA TODAY/Gallup Swing States survey finds, while rival Newt Gingrich now trails the president by a decisive 14 percentage points.

That reflects a significant decline by the former House speaker since early December, when he led Obama by three points.

The poll of the dozen states likely to determine the outcome of November's election addresses the electability argument that has driven many Republicans: Which GOP contender has the best chance of denying Obama a second term?

In a head-to-head race, Romney leads Obama by a statistically insignificant percentage point, 48%-47%, the survey finds.

But Obama leads Gingrich, 54%-40%. The president's standing against him has risen nine points since early December; Gingrich has fallen by eight.

Gingrich fares less well than Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who trails Obama by seven points, 50%-43%, and former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum, who also trails by seven points, 51%-44%.

I don't think it's the cakewalk for Obama so many on the Left keep boasting about. Obama has some real problems.

although if you relied on what the righties usually love, which is rasmussen, the president is +6 over romney.

funny how you don't love that poll today.

Many on the Left are boasting about it being a cakewalk for Obama if he runs against Mitt Romney. And you're free to post any Poll you choose. So go for it. :)

The margin for Mitt Romney will widen once Obama is exposed in the debates. Obama had it easy with McCain.

On this board, I'd say it's a few lefties who think Obama will win in a cakewalk. I think in the case of Romney being the GOP candidate most folks look at it as a toss-up.
Who knows what will happen in regards to the economy. Much of Europe is facing a the high possibility of a double dip recession which much of it is due to going at austerity to hard and too fast shrinking their economies, according to most economists. If Europe experiences a recession again, so will the US. Sooo,,,, say we are in another recession, Obama loses.

Obama's numbers are going up, especially since his speech last Tuesday.

It seems the Christian social fundamentalist media aka conservative media is in denial of this.

your RCP link does not specify swing states, which is what is being discussed (see thread title).

Yeah sure, Gallup and USA Today are 'Christian social fundamentalist media.' Man, you are one funny but messed up dipshit.

The polls continue to be good to John McCain and he may be benefiting from a Democratic primary race that is growing increasingly negative and appears to have no end in sight. New surveys show McCain leading nationally and have him head in the crucial battleground states of Ohio and Florida.

The survey results in those two states follow on polls from last week showing him leading in Michigan and Pennsylvania, two other states that could decide the election in November.

According to a new Rasmussen tracking poll released Sunday, McCain leads pro-abortion candidate Barack Obama 47-43 nationwide with 10 percent of voters undecided. He’s ahead of Hillary Clinton 46-43 percent with 11 percent undecided.

A new Gallup tracking poll shows similar results, with McCain topping Obama 47-44 percent but tied with Clinton at 46 percent apiece.

Considering that Republican candidates have flooded the media with anti Obama propaganda for 6 months, I'm surprised that Romney and other candidates are not doing better in the polls. The Republican primaries and debates have dominated the political landscape. Once the Democrats go into real campaign mode after the convention, Obama will move further ahead in the polls.
