Little Love For Big Government.

Americans' concerns about the threat of big government continue to dwarf those about big business and big labor, and by an even larger margin now than in March 2009. The 64% of Americans who say big government will be the biggest threat to the country is just one percentage point shy of the record high, while the 26% who say big business is down from the 32% recorded during the recession. Relatively few name big labor as the greatest threat.

Historically, Americans have always been more concerned about big government than big business or big labor in response to this trend question dating back to 1965. Concerns about big business surged to a high of 38% in 2002, after the large-scale accounting scandals at Enron and WorldCom. An all-time-high 65% of Americans named big government as the greatest threat in 1999 and 2000. Worries about big labor have declined significantly over the years, from a high of 29% in 1965 to the 8% to 11% range over the past decade and a half.

yeah, until you talk about cutting their social security...

Too true.

[sarcasm]You can't cut government, think about the firefighters, teachers, and policemen.[/sarcasm]

That's the usual scare tactic to keep spending more than we should.

This was pretty interesting too...

Democrats Lead Increase in Concern About Big Government

Almost half of Democrats now say big government is the biggest threat to the nation, more than say so about big business, and far more than were concerned about big government in March 2009. The 32% of Democrats concerned about big government at that time -- shortly after President Obama took office -- was down significantly from a reading in 2006, when George W. Bush was president.

By contrast, 82% of Republicans and 64% of independents today view big government as the biggest threat, slightly higher percentages than Gallup found in 2009.

In your opinion, which of the following will be the biggest threat to the country in the future -- big business, big labor, or big government?

And that’s the problem: a poorly worded question.

What constitutes ‘big government’?

The ‘Patriot’ Act is big government, as is warrantless wiretaps, arrest and detention without probable cause, and unauthorized surveillance of private citizens.

The current Defense Authorization Act is big government and the Alabama immigration law is big government.

In this context, then, the people are justified to be concerned.

To add to this--the reason is because--we have already seen what big explosive government can do this economy. They collapsed it. What a lot of people do not seem to understand is that the Federal Government regulates Wall Street--not the other way around--and the only thing the people have some control over is the Federal Government because we can vote.

I don't think I can think of one single Federal Government agency that has been run efficiently and effectively--they all crash. And when they crash it comes right down on taxpayers heads.

And all of those things do concern me. I'm also concerned about the individual mandate, nation building, the EPA labeling what trees breathe as a pollutant, forcing me to buy light bulbs that I don't like, ect. ect.

SOPA and the new defense bill are just the beginning. If people think they will stop there, they are sorely lacking a necessary knowledge of history.

you don't want to honor social security? then don't force people to pay into it and then mock them for collecting it.. that's just an assholian thing to dew don't ewe think?

'Force' is the key word there. Big Government Socialists/Progressives are all about force. Just like their health insurance Mandate. They will force Citizens to do what they want. That's what Big Government is all about. If it's so great, why do they have to force the People to go along? More Americans should think about that.

yep,, they force you to pay into social security and medicare and then bitch endlessly when you collect on what was promised to you.. they be so damn dumb.

The Patriotic didn't authorize a single dime of additional spending or cause a single employee to be hired. "Big government" is measured by the percentage of the GDP it consumes and the control it has over private enterprise. The Patriot act can be repealed tomorrow. As many of the libs in this forum have pointed out, repealing social programs like Social Security is next to impossible.

No, big government is anytime the government oversteps it's boundaries to either give itself more power or make itself bigger. It doesn't matter if that's applied to the private sector, individual civilians, or to itself.

Our Government is bigger than ever before so it's no coicidence we now have less freedom & liberty. Big Government is not only defined by how much money it spends. While that is a big part of it,it's not the only aspect of Big Government.

My thoughts exactly. Banning gay marriage, limiting voter rights, and taking away collective bargaining are all big gov't.

BTW, on my last point, thanks to the OP and that nice graph for bringing light to the fact that - despite what conservatives would have you believe - Americans don't fear the union boogiemen.

Unions are the scapegoat for offshoring and the profiteering of Big Business... nothing more.

Its not just the cost but the over-classification that intentionally keeps citizens in the dark.

Allowing government employees to unionize is not a reduction in government. It's an increase in government. Anyone who claims otherwise is simply a douche.

I love the way libturds redefine every term so that it matches their agenda.
