Gallup: Conservatives Finish 2009 as No. 1 Ideological Group- so you know it is higher

GALLUP:

PRINCETON, NJ -- The increased conservatism that Gallup first identified among Americans last June persisted throughout the year, so that the final year-end political ideology figures confirm Gallup's initial reporting: conservatives (40%) outnumbered both moderates (36%) and liberals (21%) across the nation in 2009.

The rather abrupt three-point increase between 2008 and 2009 in the percentage of Americans calling themselves conservative is largely owing to an increase -- from 30% to 35% -- in the percentage of political independents adopting the label. Over the same period, there was only a slight increase in professed conservatism among Republicans (from 70% to 71%) and no change among Democrats (at 21%).

This isn't really a surprise to me. I remember a poll a little while back that had more Democrats defining themselves as Conservative than Liberal.

From your own link:

Thus far in 2009, Gallup has found an average of 36% of Americans considering themselves Democratic, 28% Republican, and 37% independent. When independents are pressed to say which party they lean toward, 51% of Americans identify as Democrats, 39% as Republicans, and only 9% as pure independents.

I agree no surprise
Papa Obama and the Democrats have turned off a lot of people from liberalism

Yes indeed...

I'm an independant. I voted for Obama and I'm not stupid. Stupid would be if I voted for him again. I assure you I wont be voting for him a second time.

That only means our infiltration program is beginning to work. Soon you will only have a choice between conservative and conservative.

does this mean that the rest of the cons came out of the closet after Bush was out and a dem was in?

You do know that includes conservative republicans, democrats and independents don't you?? So i would hardly consider that a win for republicans. As for the increase being caused by an increase in independents calling themselves conservatives i wonder if that has anything to do with the fact that a lot of conservative republicans are now calling themselves independents?? Did the poll take into account this shift or did it ingore it??

Furthermore, in previous versions of this poll, gallup asked independents which party they felt more in line with and in the past versions of this polls democrats outnumbered republicans. Did this poll offer a similar question or did it ignore that this time??

Not quite. Look at the chart. Self identified "Liberals" are always much lower, and have been for years. Obama isn't turning anyone off from liberalism..

Perhaps
Maybe it is better to say, Papa Obama is reminding people why socialism is bad

Maybe it's better to say that this is not a major change in self-identification - in fact, pretty much just the status-quo.

Maybe you should get a dictionary, and find out what "socialism" means.

Believe me comrade, I know

Perhaps it would be more interesting and entertaining if you told us what you think it is not
:eusa_angel:

Wow!

Lets check those numbers out...

Republicans get the 40% Conservative vote
Democrats get the 36% Moderate and 21% Liberal for 57%

Same percentage as in the House and Senate

No, instead of that, why don't you tell me what exactly has Obama done that is socialist?

Everyone loves to throw the term "socialist" around, but I've yet to see someone actually tell me HOW Obama is a socialist.

Lets compare

Would you say he is more, less or equal in his "appreciation" of gov't involvement in the individual's life than say
Thomas Jefferson?

Government involvement in individual's lives is NOT a tenet of socialism.
