Republican gubernatorial hopeful Eric Johnson on Thursday unveiled his plan for dealing with what he termed the federal government’s failure to secure the nation’s borders against illegal immigration.

Johnson, a former state senator from Savannah, said at a Capitol news conference that he would require all public K-12 schools to require proof of citizenship of students enrolling in Georgia. He said he would also require public hospitals to do the same thing when patients arrive in emergency rooms for treatment.

While Johnson said he would not deny any student a seat in a K-12 classroom or treatment at a hospital, collecting the data is the first step toward requiring Washington to deal with the situation.

“In addition to enforcing current law, we can deter illegal immigrants from residing in Georgia by cutting off the two reasons they come here: jobs and taxpayer-funded benefits,” he said. “It has come to a point when we have to say enough is enough. It is time for the federal government to secure our borders.”

A U.S. Supreme Court case involving Texas’ plans to charge illegal immigrants tuition at public schools requires that states provide education at K-12 schools for all students who can prove residency in the district. Johnson believes that by collecting data on illegal immigrants at enrollment, the state can build a case to challenge the Supreme Court’s ruling or sue the federal government to reimburse the state for the cost of educating illegal immigrants

Send the feds the bill. How refreshing.

You can't get treated at the ER without an insurance card and lots of questions. An additional yes or no question would not endanger lives.

In NJ, we may not even ask for a SS# for school registration. On account of the ACLU of course. Schools have been sued for using old forms that have a block for that - even though no child has even been denied.

They do not even know how many illegals there are. 12 million? 20 million? How on earth can they consider "reform" when they don't even know who they are?

The American Criminal Liberties Union? I think everyone is sick of them.

How about arresting the parents for child endangerment unless they can PROVE they came to the US legally.

Here is the expenditures for a town that has 80% hispanics and 92-96% hispanic students.

Here's the source of the finances:

As you can see the local taxes pay for only 23.2% of school expences while the state pays 62.8% and federal 13.9%. This is very unusual for a school district but since hispanics are getting the "red carpet treatment", they get the lion's share of the revenue.

Secure the border!!! If not, then they, by our Constitution, are entitled to many protections. The realistic thing to do, is NOT let them in in the first place. Geez, what a concept. Stop the bleeding heart mentality and do what you have to do! Keep them out!

They can't be busted. And the majority of ER visits are non-urgent. They can visit a doctor and pay out of pocket for pink eye, just like many Americans do.

If it would have that much of a chilling effect, then maybe they'd go home. I have a feeling that is the goal.
