After the 1988 election, the Republicans have won the popular vote in ONE presidential election, and have lost it five times. With a bad economy, an unemployment rate of almost 8%, and his biggest legislative success (Obamacare) being unpopular with a majority of the country, the President STILL won with over 2.5 percent of the popular vote and an electoral college landslide. The last president to be re-elected with unemployment this high was FDR in 1936. If Republicans can't win the White House when things are this terrible, how will they ever be able to? The Democrats come into every presidential election with over 200 electoral votes in the bag because some of the biggest states in the country are solidly blue; California, Illinois, New York, etc. The Republican shoe-ins are shrinking, with Obama having won states like Virginia in the past two elections. The last Republican landslide for the presidency was in 1988 when Bush I beat Dukakis. Bush won states like California and New Jersey; that's not happening every again. And as the Hispanic population continues to grow in Texas, it's only a matter of time before it turns Democratic.

When Reagan won the Election in 1980, the white vote was 88% of the electorate; on Tuesday it was only 72%, and with the high birth rate of Hispanics it is shrinking fast. Whites are projected to be a minority in the US before 2050; this year was the first year in the US where minority births outnumbered white births. The Republican Party has a major problem with courting minorities. Even an affluent minority like Asians seems repelled by Republicans; the President won Asians 73% to 26%.

So how do you think the Republicans can turn things around?
