Fusion Power Update – Getting Closer!

Fusion Power Update – Getting Closer! | CleanTechies Blog - CleanTechies.com

Researchers at Sandia Laboratories are getting closer to nuclear fusion that will produce more energy than it takes to create the fusion reaction! They are very close to the break even point.

Magnetically imploded tubes called liners, intended to help produce controlled nuclear fusion at scientific “break-even” energies or better within the next few years, have functioned successfully in preliminary tests, according to a Sandia research paper accepted for publication by Physical Review Letters (PRL).

In the photo, Sandia researcher Ryan McBride pays close attention to the tiny central beryllium liner to be imploded by the powerful magnetic field generated by Sandia’s Z machine. The larger cylinders forming a circle on the exterior of the base plate measure Z’s load current by picking up the generated magnetic field. (Photo by Randy Montoya)

To exceed scientific break-even is the most hotly sought-after goal of fusion research, in which the energy released by a fusion reaction is greater than the energy put into it — an achievement that would have extraordinary energy and defense implications.

That the liners survived their electromagnetic drubbing is a key step in stimulating further Sandia testing of a concept called MagLIF (Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion), which will use magnetic fields and laser pre-heating in the quest for energetic fusion.

In the dry-run experiments just completed, cylindrical beryllium liners remained reasonably intact as they were imploded by huge magnetic field of Sandia’s Z machine, the world’s most powerful pulsed-power accelerator. Had they overly distorted, they would have proved themselves incapable of shoveling together nuclear fuel — deuterium and possibly tritium — to the point of fusing them. Sandia researchers expect to add deuterium fuel in experiments scheduled for 2013.

Wind and solar will be dead when this is successful!

So, we will forever be dependent on an elite that knows how to run these centralized forms of energy. Instead of reaching true, local independence, everyone will have to hope that the high priests of power remain our friends and always on call.

You don't consider the fact that wind and solar will never make up more than 20% of our energy. YOU don't give a damn about people already struggling to pay for the damn energy produced by it. I'm not against wind or solar, but we must face the facts of its limitations.

Fusion will be effective, reliable and cheap. Billions will have better lives once we get fusion working for these reasons. Funny how you people always look down at everyone, but your fucking plans do more harm than good for the poor. Please stop being so high and mighty.

That is the biggest slice of bologna I've seen in a lifetime of trying to communicate with self-proclaimed environmentalists.. Just because the technology is difficult to engineer and maintain -- the people of the world are screwed. As if striking a match was too complicated for cavepeople to comprehend..

Maybe --- we'll see you invent an alternative that grandma can whip up her backyard from material in her compost pile.

"High priests of power" ----- EXACTLY.. Anything more complicated than a light switch is SINFUL, DESTRUCTIVE, and EVIL.. PLEASE continue to contribute to this board --- you're a real hoot.... Seriously -- your side needs more exposure like this...

No, big wind and solar will be dead. That of an individual homeowner will be very much alive, powering both their home and vehicles. I hope they succeed. But centralized energy generation is still vulneable to massive disruption by bad weather. And many home owners prefer not to pay others for their power, when they can save money generating their own.

I hope you are correct about the cheap part. However, I am old enough to remember when nuclear power was sold to us as a source so cheap that it would not even have to be metered. And then came the bill, and Three Mile Island.

Fear is the reason that atomic power is neither cheap nor safe.
If we used "breeder reactors" we could recycle the waste of one reactor and use it in another. we wouldn't have tons of very long life waste products to deal with and the power would be cheaper. We have the technology to make redundent, self-contained, mechanically reliable nuclear power plants simple and workable without the 100s of million dollars it costs to make one current reactor. We can do it without harming the environment. We will never make them because we have a government bureaucracy that mandates automated electronic monitoring and tripple redundancy of every part.

Great news then. Fusion will give us more power with a shorter radioactive half life. The sooner we can slow down our consumption of an ever dwindling fuel source, the better.
