Number of megawatts: 280

Expected cost: $1 billion

Projected completion date: 2011

Plan: “Solana,” meaning “a sunny place” in Spanish, is an apt name for the nascent solar farm situated about 70 miles outside Phoenix, where summer temperatures can reach 120 degrees Fahrenheit. Specialty solar technology firm Abengoa Solar, supported by Arizona Public Service Company (APS), is developing a solar farm spanning 1,900 acres.

That is three square miles.

Located about 50 miles west of Phoenix in Tonopah, Ariz., Palo Verde Nuclear generates 3,810 megawatts

Do the math and now one plant to equal Palo Verde Nuclear is 40.8 square miles.

Lets be fair though, a solar plants energy is not 24 hours a day like a nuke, even the developers admit in Arizona its 6 hours a day of peak power. Lets give the Greenie Meanies double, that more than fair for the arguement. 12 hours a day.

The Greenies are proposing 80 square miles of solar.

Two more Nuclear sites in California, rough guess they produce the equal power of Arizona.

The greenies need 160 square miles of solar.

Nuclear is only 20% of our power, its clean, we can leave it alone. Lets get rid of fossil.

The greenies need to cover the entire USA with solar panels, where do they think the will have room for the windmills.

The end of the solar panel is near by if this is true. Cold fusion has NO pollution(heavy element and light element) and doesn't take up acre after acre of land that we should be growing food and building on. Solar and wind are as good as dead if this is true. It just hasn't hit the ground yet!

Why can't people make this simple connections that current solar panel production techniques are not a 24/7 power supply that our economy needs to compete in the global economy. There is no substitute when comparing petrol/nuclear power vs solar/wind( myth of free energy). I'm willing to bet solar production is far more toxic to the environment than petrol. Green energy press doesn't report the toxic aftermath of solar panel production in china nor do they know that NF3 is a byproduct of solar panel production which is 700 times more than CO2 as proponent to supposedly man made global whining.

Here in the US we are producing many solar panels. There is no reason to buy Chinese. We have equal trading partners, Japan, Germany, that also produce good panels.

As far as the GHG NF3, anyone allowing that to escape is damned foolish. Just the waste alone is reason for preventing it from escaping into the atmosphere. And you are wrong about the 700 number, it is actually far higher than that.

Not sure on the acreage figure, but I imagine that Florida is like all other areas in the nation. There are vast acreages of warehouse and commercial roofs that would easily support solar farms measuring in sections, not acres, in aggregate.

It doesn't satisfied the 24/7 power supply required to meet our economy's needs. Battery storage won't alleviate the problem either. Toxic waste from batteries would be the result...you know bad for the environment.
