France taking hard line on immigration

I do. I certainly don't want us to be just like the French, but I think it's important to look at how other countries deal with big issues. And immigration certainly is a big issue.

"Citizens" in several states have tried to deal with their own problems, much to the chagrin of the Obama administration.

I'd love to know how many people would support something like this. My guess is it would be the majority of LEGAL citizens.

It's funny how you guys cherry pick stuff from other cultures without examining the full picture. Ever been to France? Ever studied French history?

Probably not. So you go off and say..if we were more xenophobic..like the French..we'd be better off.

Ever wonder why France isn't a super power today?

Socialist nanny state comes to mind.

While they certainly to lean towards 'nanny statism', the french do have quite a rational approach to the whole 'nanny' thing. For example, their healthcare system (which does have its problems) is part funded by the state through taxes, but each citizen is required to have private insurance to cover anything that the state does not provide. Also, their welfare system pays unemployment for 10 months of the year. Because, the government views it that, with their vast wine production etc, every unemployed person should be able to work for at least 2 months during the picking season. That's pretty rational to me.

I like France, and generally I love the French people. Despite what we are told by the media, the French are not 'anti-American'... quite the opposite.

Obviously.

Should this be a model for other countries to follow? If immigration reform was put on a referendum, do you think U.S. citizens would support it?

Isn't it up to the citizens in each nation to decide these issues?

I think it is.

I think the point is, most people in the US would support a similar immigration policy. As opposed to the idiotic one we have now.
