Foreigners seeking French nationality face tougher requirements as of January 1, when new rules drawn up by Interior Minister Claude Guéant come into force.

Candidates will be tested on French culture and history, and will have to prove their French language skills are equivalent to those of a 15-year-old mother tongue speaker. They will also be required to sign a new charter establishing their rights and responsibilities.

... adding that migrants should be integrated through language and “an adherence to the principals, values and symbols of our democracy”. He stressed the importance of the secular state and equality between women and men: rhetoric perceived largely as a snipe at Muslim applicants, who make up the majority of the 100,000 new French citizens admitted each year.

Under further proposals put forward by the ruling UMP party, non-French children who would normally be naturalised at the age of 18 (those who are born in the country and have spent most of their childhood there) would instead have to formally apply to the state.

France makes it harder to become French - FRANCE - FRANCE 24

Proficient in the language and allegiance to the country? How radical!!!!

Ending birthright citizenship? Wow.

Obviously.

Should this be a model for other countries to follow? If immigration reform was put on a referendum, do you think U.S. citizens would support it?

You wanna be like the French?

There's an airplane going there every few hours from most major airports.

The French are incredibly xenophobic. Oh..and it's always been incredibly difficult to immigrate to France.

I do. I certainly don't want us to be just like the French, but I think it's important to look at how other countries deal with big issues. And immigration certainly is a big issue.

"Citizens" in several states have tried to deal with their own problems, much to the chagrin of the Obama administration.

I'd love to know how many people would support something like this. My guess is it would be the majority of LEGAL citizens.

It's funny how you guys cherry pick stuff from other cultures without examining the full picture. Ever been to France? Ever studied French history?

Probably not. So you go off and say..if we were more xenophobic..like the French..we'd be better off.

Ever wonder why France isn't a super power today?

"You guys"? Talk about xenophobic. :cuckoo:

No I have never been to France. But I am interested in their wine, art, and kissing as well.

I've never been to Hazelton PA either, but I am interested in how they are trying to deal with immigration enforcement.

See how that works? :eusa_whistle:

I'm guessing if you show up to the immigration office wearing a burqa, and shouting allahu akbar, sharia now and death to the infidel, you're fucked?

Socialist nanny state comes to mind.

Had you ever been there..you'd know..it's impossible to be considered "French" without being born there.

Simple as that.

Which France, isn't.

And they have their own version of the Tea Party. They love guns, booze and god.

Nobody cares what the "Frogs" think or do.

France has produced 70 Nobel Prize Laureates. How many Nobel Laureates have the muslime shitholes produced?

In 2007 Islam and Judaism's holiest holidays overlapped for 10 days.
Muslims racked up 397 dead bodies in 94 terror attacks across 10
countries during this time... while Jews worked on their 159th N
obel Prize.

That pisses them off more. More power to France. Viva LePen, the next french president

Obviously.

If the same law were to be put forth before the American electorate, it would pass overwhelmingly.

Every country including our own takes a hard line with "legal" immigration. No other country except the US has open borders for criminal illegals.
