France Bans Iran Freedom Rally

http://www.activistchat.com/blogiran/movabletype/archives/2005/02/french_governme.html

Paris, Feb. 04 - Iran's main opposition group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran, issued a statement today condemning the French government's decision to ban a peaceful protest by Iranian exiles in Paris against the dictatorship ruling Iran, despite prior approval.

The NCRI called France's decision to cancel the rally "kowtowing to the demands of the medieval regime seeking to expand its repression from Tehran to Paris", adding "French officials as part of a shameful deal with the clerical regime in power in Iran, banned a February 10th demonstration by Iranians in Paris".

February 10 coincides with the 26th anniversary of the 1979 anti-monarchic revolution in Iran.

It said, "According to reports from organisers of the demonstration in Paris, more than 40,000 Iranians from across Europe were expected to attend the rally, something which would terrify the ruling mullahs".

"The demonstration was sponsored by more than 250 European parliamentarians and dozens of international human rights organisations", it added.

In an interview with Iran Focus one Iranian exile living in Paris called the decision "a mockery to French values for basic human rights, such as the freedom of expression".

"Iranians who escaped the clutches of the medieval regime have the right to protest against those who have executed over 120,000 dissidents and imprisoned and tortured more than half a million. France, which is thought to be the bastion of freedom, has allowed the regime to spread its tentacles here and taken away the legitimate right of our oppressed people to demonstrate for their fellow compatriots under the mullahs' dictatorship", Javad Mahmoudi said.

The NCRI revealed from sources from within Iran that France gave into the demands of the Iranian regime to secure economic deals for French companies, adding that Tehran was spreading its dictatorship thousands of kilometres to the heart of Europe."

If banning pro-freedom rallys is their wish, so be it. It won't stop the Iranian people from winning their freedom.

You're right, couldn't find a thing about the ban or protest in France. Did find this on Germany though. France is playing the appeasement game, it would be ironic if the eye opening were to occur in Germany at some point in time:

Scots Tory to speak against Iran at Berlin demonstration

JOHN INNES

A SCOTS Conservative MEP is to address a gathering of 40,000 exiled Iranians in Germany at a demonstration against the fundamentalist regime in Tehran.

Struan Stevenson will tell the crowd at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin today that "the days of the brutal fascist regime are numbered".

The demonstration has been organised by the National Council for Resistance in Iran.

The organisation’s leader, Maryam Rajavi, was recently controversially invited to the European Parliament in Strasbourg by Mr Stevenson.

The mullahs who rule Iran consider Mrs Rajavi a terrorist and protested over her invitation to address MEPs.

But Mr Stevenson, who is the co-chairman of the Friends of Free Iran intergroup in the European Parliament, said it is Tehran’s rulers who are the real terrorists.

He will say: "The mullahs have executed 120,000 supporters of the resistance movement since they came to power.

"They routinely execute pregnant women, hang children in public, stone women to death, amputate arms and legs of offenders and condone torture.

"Now, in open defiance of the West, the clerical regime in Tehran is pursuing its relentless quest to construct a nuclear weapon."

Mr Stevenson will tell the crowd that only the Iranian resistance can overthrow the regime and bring democracy to the people of Iran.

Two days ago, the Tehran government offered an olive branch to the United States, claiming it wanted to resolve decades of differences.

The Iranian youth movements are getting it done, slowly but surely. France's postition is understandable; if they want to protest for democracy, do it in their own country. The youth movement there are listening and are ready to fight, which is more than what I can say about Iraq. Iraq wasn't ready for anything!

For once, let's allow the winds of change do its job, instead of immediate military action.

BS, a peaceful gathering promoting democracy (in a democratic nation) should be perfectly acceptable.

It figures you would support a ban on a freedom rally. The French ban is pure appeasement to the Mullahs.

See hylandr there's this little thing about anyone speaking their mind Iran getting THROWN IN PRISON. Jesus you are obtuse.

Every era in human history has had people like you. The fighting we-can't-do spirit. You are akin to the Torys in Revolutionary America and the pre-WWII isolationists. Why don't you realize for once that saying "freedom is for us, not you" is the biggest insult one country can give to another?
