Think Progress » Foxx: Republicans ‘Passed Civil Rights Bills Back In The 60s Without Very Much Help’ From Democrats

<excerpt>
Foxx’s claim that Republicans were the real engine behind the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is a common notion among conservatives. But as Cardoza points out, it was President Lyndon Johnson who “choreographed passage of this historic measure in 1964.” In fact, the Republican presidential candidate in 1964, Sen. Barry Goldwater (R-AZ), voted against the legislation.

To support the claim that Republicans were actually the architects of civil rights, conservatives often point out that a “higher percentage of Republicans than Democrats supported the civil-rights bill.” But this ignores the “distinct split between Northern and Southern politicians” on the issue. When this is taken into account, the facts show that “in both the North and the South, Democrats supported the 1964 Civil Rights Act at a higher rate than the Republicans.”

Seems like to me when the Democrats are caught up in a lie it's no big deal and nothing much is made of it. However, if a Republican is caught up in a lie it's all you hear about. Why is that? Do the Democrats have the market cornered on telling lies and getting away with it?

Uh Huh,EEEEEEETZ DA BOOOOOOOOOSH AN FOX NOOOOOOOOOZ!!!! Yea i think people are pretty sick of that tired stuff. Yikes!

I claim that Republicans are reactionaries. If they lie and get hit with the truth, they scream. They see someone else lie, they scream.

Do not believe me? The OP is evidence A

And Here is evidence B

Any Republicans wish to scream--uhhh debate these facts??

If the word "Conservative" replaced the word "Republican", Rep. Foxx's claims would be easily debunked.

It's the Conservative ideology that is guilty for dragging their feet on Civil Rights (or women's rights or gay rights or consumer protection or environmental regulations or child labor or education reform or health care reform) not necessarily the Republican party.

That's why it's difficult to believe that there are women, gays, consumers, folks who breathe, children, smart people or sick people who would espouse and embrace the foot dragging Conservative ideology!

Civil Rights Act 1964

The original House version:

Northern Republicans: 138-24 (85%-15%)

"In the Senate, Minority Leader Everett Dirksen had little trouble rounding up the votes of most Republicans, and former presidential candidate Richard Nixon also lobbied hard for the bill. Senate Majority Leader Michael Mansfield and Senator Hubert Humphrey led the Democrat drive for passage, while the chief opponents were Democrat Senators Sam Ervin, of later Watergate fame, Albert Gore Sr., and Robert Byrd. Senator Byrd, a former Klansman whom Democrats still call "the conscience of the Senate", filibustered against the civil rights bill for fourteen straight hours before the final vote. The House of Representatives passed the bill by 289 to 126, a vote in which 79% of Republicans and 63% of Democrats voted yes"

What is the full break down, frank?

That is--what about Northern Dems and Southern Republicans. Just wondering.

Using Franks stats, Republican support was key to passing the Civil rights act of 1964 and the arguement that it was the action of just one party is proven false on the suspicion that the remaining votes came mostly from Northern Democrats and not Southern Republicans.

Of course, this is a guess based on the possibility that the issue was more divided along region than ideology.

The Democratic Party + Robert Byrd (KKK Grand Wizard) = Tired & Disingenuous Race-Baiting BULL CHIT! Nuff said.

It's true, even today, that many republican country clubs don't allow blacks or jews. The Los Angeles Country Club is but one glaring example.
