The Federal Reserve created several programs to allow banks to swap assets for collateral and get liquidity. They were not "given" money. Most of it was paid back. They started the programs in 2007. It was created by Paulson and approved by Bush. It hit its zenith in late 2008 when Lehman collapsed. It continued under Obama. I don't recall this being a big deal for the Left. I do recall it being a big deal for some libertarians who have been consistently critical of the Fed's operations. It's not a left/right issue. It's an issue about monetary policy.
