SNAP is not ‘welfare,’ it’s a supplemental nutrition program for working families, children, the elderly, and the disabled.

There are a number of factors contributing to the increase in the use of food stamps besides the December 2007 recession and its aftermath, the consequences of which we are still addressing.

In 2009 many states with high unemployment rates were granted a Federal waiver with regard to the food stamp work requirement for able-bodied adults with no children. With the work requirement suspended, those otherwise deterred are now eligible for food stamps.

Since 2008 states have increased their efforts to reach out to those potentially eligible for food stamps. Applications for food stamps may be submitted online as well as at government and non-profit partner offices such as unemployment one-stop sites, Workforce Board offices, and other state and local government offices, including libraries.

Those who are elderly or disabled are categorically eligible for food stamps, SSI recipients realize an almost ‘automatic’ application process. Elderly Americans are eligible for food stamps if their monthly income doesn’t exceed 165 percent of the Federal poverty level, as opposed to 130 percent for others. As our population ages and more disability applications are approved, we’ll see a corresponding increase in the number of persons eligible for and receiving food stamps.

Issues concerning fraud and waste don’t mitigate the need of the program nor does it warrant its elimination. That a few individuals abuse the program is not representative of those currently participating and benefiting, especially the most vulnerable members of our society.

Rather than relying on discredited rightist sources such as Breitbart, or the subjective, conservative bias of a WSJ op-ed piece, conservatives should instead research a given issue themselves to avoid the embarrassment of exhibiting such ignorance in the future, as demonstrated in this thread.
