....at the Florida Senate Building. They propose a ban on certain types of guns. They advocate that this will preclude any school shootings that may occur in the future. It will make them safer while at school. They are naive and clearly driven by emotion and errant logic.

Their principle errant thought is that a ban on anything will be observed by criminals and others that seek, for whatever reason, to circumvent it. We already have several hundreds of thousands of bans on things and actions. They are called laws. Not one law that we have, in any municipality, state or region actually prevents a person or a group of people from violating it. It merely provides legal means to fine or punish those caught and convicted of violating it.

Laws are kept only by people that aware of them and choose not to violate them, or by those that are unaware of them and coincidentally do not violate them. As a silly example of the latter, I have been to Florida several times and never tied an elephant to a parking meter without depositing the parking fee.

We have laws against child molestation. It occurs every day.
We have laws against murder. It occurs every day.
We have laws against rape. It occurs every day.
We have laws against possession of controlled substances. It occurs every day.

You cite a law, it is highly likely that it has been violated multiple times.

Any law or ban on the possession of firearms will do NOTHING to control the criminal possession or use of firearms.

I contend that we can do more to reduce school shootings by changing how we treat them after they are caught or killed.

1. Do not mention their names. Assign them a number.
2. Do not show their faces on TV.
3. Apply mandatory death sentences. After one failed appeal, kill them.

wel we have laws against killing kids in school too but they do it. what laws can be passed that would have stopped *any* of the killings in the last 15 years?

i agree the "name in lights" could be a factor/driver in some of these. early on in journalism i learned we don't report on bomb *threats* because it encourages them. somewhere along the way we lost sight of that fact.

This is not my position for or against gun bans, but it is an irrefutable fact that the ban on automatic weapons, or if you want to be precise, the severe limitations on buying and possessing automatic weapons is arguably the main reason we almost never (or never) see mass shootings done with automatic weapons, aka machine guns.

How many such shootings with automatic weapons can you name since those type guns were severely restricted?

Did you just make the argument that laws against child molestation are useless?

Pistols as well?

Kudos to those students who are speaking out and marching.

Bless their dear little hearts.

Yes, some of them are being manipulated by adults with ulterior reasons.

Bur they are young and naïve, so they do not understand.

(When I was in the 6th grade in the 1940s, my dear teacher had all us students sign a letter demanding better treatment for Native Americans. I didn't know what I was doing, but I of course wanted to please my teacher.)

*****

We adults, however, realize the following:

1. Gun laws are obeyed by good people. Bad people ignore gun laws. (Look at Chicago, Baltimore, etc.)

2. Today we are mourning the victims in Florida. We all know that it will not be the last time that we mourn the victims of a senseless killing spree.

3.It may be counterintuitive, but maybe we need MORE guns in the hands of good people.

a. I understand that Texas allows university students to bring guns to class. If a bad guy/gal tries to start trouble, a student can permanently neutralize that bad guy/gal.

Fully automatic weapons are really expensive even if you are licensed to buy them.

Which simply adds to the difficulty of legally obtaining them, which might explain why killers don't use them,

although it's a good guess many of them would like to.

Maybe they would, until they fired them the first time and realised how inaccurate they are.

Careful, Asaratis, you are trying to use common sense and reason on liberals. Not likely to go anywhere. No, the Left has been gunning (ahem) for the NRA and guns for DECADES. Just one more favorite peeve to claim the victim of. Their argument is a simple one: if these kids didn't have guns there couldn't be any shootings! They do not understand that the part about kids "not being able to get guns" is the hardest bridge to cover. Guns will always be accessible, guns will always be used and the only sensible solution to to go after the ROOT CAUSE---- why these kids want to kill others, and why the schools do not effect changes making it VERY DIFFICULT to get to or inside a school with one.

SO WHAT WILL HAPPEN?

These children will be used as pawns by their parents (missing school no less) to go on state and national campaigns organized by their parents attacking the NRA and gun-ban laws. Some law will be passed to address the issue. No one will ask why the democrats never did anything and the blame will go as always on the GOP for siding with the NRA and "not caring about the kids."

After the new laws are passed, millions of people will be harmed and not one iota change will occur in school shootings because there are still all these guns out there! No one can stop misuse of a firearm anymore than they can stop a car driver from going berserk and using it to run over a crowd of people.

When nothing changes, still unable to come to grips with the behavioral problem our culture induces as the real cause of this, and knowing that nothing short of outright national mandatory confiscation and a total ban on guns will stop most people from having and being able to access firearms, they will simply keep pushing for the latter, because THAT HAS BEEN THEIR AIM ALL ALONG, banning guns. And their argument? It worked for Europe.

America: The Great Experiment as the Shining Beacon of the world because it went its separate way is now being driven by socialists to look back to what we split away from as the Standard for what we should again become more like.

Should we deregulate them down to the level of the AR 15 and find out?

The school kids have every right to be upset, I have pitched a mini fit over some small thing thought was wrong, am guessing if some one came & shot up my place of business would be a little more than mildly upset.

Sure why not the 1994 ban did fuck all to stop anything.
