Why do ANY athletes get police escort?? These are just useless entertainers.

Florida Sheriff’s Office Will not Escort Miami Dolphins Until They Stand for National Anthem

sep 28 2017 The Miami Dolphins are also part of the unpatriotic movement started by Colin Kaepernick that involves refusing to stand at attention for the national anthem. However, they are all starting to feel the consequences of their actions, with the Florida sheriffs office announcing that they will not be escorting the Dolphins to their games

unless they stop with the disrespectful behavior. The local Miami police union supported the decision of the Broward County Sheriff’s Office and will not be doing any escorting either, reports The Sports Hall.

President of the International Union of Police Associations, Jeffrey Bell said,

“I respect their right to have freedom of speech. However, in certain organizations and certain jobs you give up that right of your freedom of speech temporary while you serve that job or while you play in an NFL game.”

Ok, now we are really getting into First Amendment territory. The Sheriff's Dept, a government entity, is stating they will no longer give escort service to the Dolphins because they don't stand for the Anthem. Definitely a violation of the players' First Amendment rights. They should be contacting the ACLU over this, IMO.

Sorry no violation at all

So...the government can withdraw protection if your speech is not to their liking?

Am I the only one to see the irony involved in this?

The players are protesting police racism...yet the police watch over them like private body guards?

Let's be honest, NFL players...people like you get special treatment by the police...and you've probably gotten it since you were in high school! You also get special treatment from your teachers as well. Isn't America a wonderful country?

why do they get escort service anyways?
It would be funny if the players start bitching about the people they protest wont escort them

Why do you think the Dolphins players have a "right" to escort service from the Sheriff's Department? Is that something you get? It's not something I get! Yet there they are "protesting" the way that police treat them? (eye roll)

Excellent idea! The ACLU should escort them.

I think it was more of a courtesy than protection. The police have real crimes to pursue, has there ever been a player put in jeopardy going to the field?

The police do it because they're HUGE fans of the team and it gets them right there on the field to watch the game...plus they pick up some nice cash for the detail.

There’s no First Amendment violation and the BSO is within their rights to deny the Dolphins’ service since they are hired off duty. That only means the Dolphins will have to hire someone else to do that job. For BSO, it means giving up a perk which includes free access to home games for the officers who used to work inside the stadium.

That covers the NFL...but now we are talking the Sheriff's Dept...a government entity...withdrawing protection because they don't like the players' free speech. As many have pointed out...the First Amendment is about protection from the government....well, the Sheriff IS the government.

They’ll still have escorts... it just won’t be BSO.

Is it a right? I wouldn't say so...but it IS something the government entity has done for them in the past. Can said government entity STOP providing that protection/service because they don't like what the players said? What IS Free Speech if it isn't freedom from government interference?

the government is interfering in the free enterprise of NFL ownership...

NFL owners have defended their players, so where does the government get off...??

The BSO was not operating under the capacity of a government agency when they escorted players. They were privately hired as off-duty police. That same sheriff’s office rejected pleas last year from the police union to back down from escorting Dolphin players, so who knows why they did an about face now?
