One committee member, Rep. Kathleen Passidomo (R-Naples) said she'd read recently a horrible story out of Texas about the rape of a young girl.

"There was an article about an 11 year old girl who was gangraped in Texas by 18 young men because she was dressed like a 21-year-old prostitute," she said. "And her parents let her attend school like that. And I think it’s incumbent upon us to create some areas where students can be safe in school and show up in proper attire so what happened in Texas doesn’t happen to our students."

No one commented on that line of reasoning.

You may wish to read that again, the rep said "there was an article about the 11 year old who was raped because she was dressed like a prostitute".

You do realize that she was recounting that article that she read as she stated, don't you? And do you realize that article appeared in the New York Times?

Here is an article about the backlash where many have called for the NY Times to apologize:

:clap2::clap2::clap2:

I don't really know how it's blaming the victim to acknowledge that there are actions that can be taken or not taken that tempt others to act badly.

We need to get rid of this victim mentality anyway. Sometimes people commit crimes against us or do other bad things. That doesnt mean we have to be a victim of their actions.

No it doesn't. You're so right on.

Remember in the Statist world? Everyone is a victim...until the Statists take over...then they make SURE everyone IS.

There's probably more to this story then we now know about. As it's been said in many..many other cases..it's best to let all the facts come out and then make an informed decision.

Perhaps you can point to me in the article where the words "21 year old prostitute" is used?

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/09/us/09assault.html?scp=1&sq=assault texas&st=cse

This is the only thing I can see that is even somewhat close to what she was saying:

Residents in the neighborhood where the abandoned trailer stands — known as the Quarters — said the victim had been visiting various friends there for months. They said she dressed older than her age, wearing makeup and fashions more appropriate to a woman in her 20s. She would hang out with teenage boys at a playground, some said.

“Where was her mother? What was her mother thinking?” said Ms. Harrison, one of a handful of neighbors who would speak on the record. “How can you have an 11-year-old child missing down in the Quarters?”

I don't see the word prostitute used once.

Never mind the fact that her line of reasoning came up when a dress code bill was being debated. If she didn't agree with the article in question, there would be no reason for her to bring it up.

How does someone get elected to public office and not know enough to avoid these kind of comments like the plague?

Perhaps American women should start wearing "burkas" if men in the US cannot be held legally responsible for controlling their biological urges!

I concur, but then that's why I focus my comments on the comments rather than the story itself.

I'm going to focus my comments about your comments on the comments, if that's "OK."

whomever made that statement is just slightly less sick than the rapist.

It's alittle unorthodox, but I think that's alright.

Once again. please read the story. The Representative did not say this. She was repeating what the NYT said.

Blame the victim. Nothing changes, really.
Disgusting woman.

The kindest explanation I've ever come across
for why people blame the victim, is that people naturally
have a sense of justice. So when someone hears of something THIS horrible,
(in this case, several young men over a period of months repeatedly
doing this and also making and/or sharing videos of the sex)
the first instinct is to "justify" it in our minds somehow.

Our sense of bad things only happening to bad people kicks in,
and this is what pushes the tendency to "blame the victim" in order to
impose a sense of justice and order
on an unjust situation we otherwise can't comprehend.

I read this concept in a book on bias and bigotry, especially media and criminal justice
cases involving public perception. I thought it made a lot of sense,
and helped me to understand why people do this. It is to feel safe,
and convince ourselves there is still law and order in the world.

It is out of the human desire for justice that these perceptions are formed,
to "assure ourselves" that bad things do not just happen "for no reason" or would not
happen to them or other people that are good and not deserving of abuse or injustice.

Slow down and read it again. Was the Representative saying that was the reason or was she saying that is what the story she read reported.

The facts are that this young child did dress like she was in her 20's, she wore make up and hung out with an older crowd. And that is from the story I read about this a week or two ago.

There is no excuse for the rapists, I hope they all get the maximum penalty allowed. One of the rapists was 27 years old.....

But there is also no excuse for the parents. What the hell were they doing?

The source was that wellknown NEOCON RAG the NEW YORK TIMES:

Residents in the neighborhood where the abandoned trailer stands — known as the Quarters — said the victim had been visiting various friends there for months. The Judge issued a "gag order" on anyone connected with this case.

The child was removed from the home and placed in protective custody elsewhere, where the last I heard they were even barring the family from making contact, because people were calling and harassing or making threats, since the girl is a witness as well as a victim.

The young men have since been named, and more details given.
Court files tell of repeated rape of girl in Cleveland | Houston & Texas News | Chron.com - Houston Chronicle

There are added complications with the prosecution going after certain men who claim innocence, while other men involved were not being equally investigated or pursued.

There was a group called Women United protesting this case, issuing public statements that sex with a child is still rape, even if she was presented as a prostitute. And the video material constitutes child pornography which brings in another slew of charges.

The issue of children trafficked into prostitution, and jailing women as criminals even if they are kidnap and rape victims, is a major problem especially in the border states
where this ties in with illegal immigration. The best resource I know on this issue is Dottie Laster with Laster Global who consults with communities, businesses and law enforcement to report houses of illegal trade, rescue women and children, and claim restitution by RICO (where any assets abused for organized crimes especially child trafficking can be seized by the state and trasnferred into restitution for victims of crime).

This story is horrifying, but if it leads to mobilizing communities to weed out the criminal activity neighborhood by neighborhood, I believe more good can come of this to protect people in the future.
I encourage people in each community to organize local resources to reclaim houses and buildings for good programs so there is less chance of abusing vacant property for crime.

The rapists were black.

That should help to explain why everyone is bending over backward to excuse their actions.

Can you imagine if a gang of WHITES was accused?
