Flat Tax is a fraud and Steve Forbes knows this...

Like it has been said, a flat tax does nothing but hurt the poor even further while helping the rich even more. Not surprising this would be a republican idea supported by the uneducated drones.

Not all GOP, just those advocating for a flat tax.

what about a flat tax with a floor. Anyone earning less than X pay no tax at all.
Anyone with one child earning x+y paying no tax at all

Or what about the option of a flat tax or an itemized return?

Sure, but there are some (such as DiamondDave) who say that is no longer a flat tax and say no deal. Its THOSE type of people I was referring to.

Whether something is fair and whether something is difficult are two different things. Will it create a bigger tax burden on the poor? Of course it will. Is it fair that anyone and everyone receiving the benefits provided through the expenditure of tax revenue contribute to it? Also yes.

What I would like is to see a shred of intellectual integrity from one of you libs and stop claiming you want things to be fair. Saying the rich need to pay more, when they already provide the bulk of the tax revenue and another nearly half of U.S. households winds up with no income tax liability and you want it to stay that way, meets no definition of fair that currently exists.

So you were in favor of letting the Bush tax cuts expire I take it....for everyone. I have my doubts, but thats ok I'll chalk you up as one of those people who can't keep their arguments in line.

Are you claiming that somehow the rich are struggling right now or that they in someway don't have it better now than they have at any other time in our nations history? You're right, your definition of fair is not one that makes any sense to me.

Saying what I said does not also require that I also be for the expiration of the Bush tax cuts. In fact it's you that might want to think about that since it was the poor and middle class brackets that received the largest cut. I am in favor of keeping them....for everyone. It's you I would imagine who is not because it would have indeed raised EVERYONE'S taxes. And since the poor and middle class are a part of everyone they're a group you insist shouldn't be burdened by something so trivial as paying income tax, I would seem logical that the left wouldn't want them to expire either, right?

I know. That's because you have an incorrect definition of the term. Fair has nothing to do with how difficult something is. Fair means to distribute equitably. That's it. It has nothing to do with whether that equitable distribution may be harder on some than others. Of course the rich aren't hurting. That isn't the point. Though that does seem to be where your definitin of fair lies. That fair somehow has something to do with how much someone else thinks someone can afford to do without. That sir, is no defintion of fair that exists.

Abolishing the income tax helps everyone.

Anyone linking to perennial socialist Robert Reich is automatically suspect and needs to read Milton Friedman instead.
They don't like liberal horror. They stick with Reich and Krugman's fairy tales.

The Republicans’ push for a flat tax masks what’s really going on.

Remember: The top 1 percent is now raking in over 20 percent of the nation’s total income and owns over 35 percent of the nation’s wealth. Under almost anyone’s view of fairness, these are grotesque portions. They’re especially large relative to what they were as recently as thirty years ago, when the top 1 percent raked in under 10 percent. And these huge portions at the top continue to increase.

Meanwhile, the top tax bracket is now 35 percent — the lowest it’s been in three decades. Between the end of World War II and 1980 it never fell below 70 percent.

Simple fairness requires three things: More tax brackets at the top, higher rates in each bracket, and the treatment of all sources of income (capital gains included) exactly the same.

Not only fairness demands it, but also fiscal prudence. A truly progressive tax would bring in tens of billions of dollars a year from the people at the top who are in the best position to afford it.

Regressives are pushing the flat tax as a smokescreen. They’d rather not have anyone talk about the unfairness and fiscal absurdity of the current system.

Rather than merely oppose the flat tax, sensible people should push for a truly progressive tax – starting with a top rate of 70 percent on that portion of anyone’s income exceeding $5 million, from whatever source.

Robert Reich (The Flat-Tax Fraud, and the Necessity of a Truly Progressive Tax)

You shouldn't talk about things you know nothing about.

Your post is all about "fairness."

Guess what??? economies are more complicated than what's fair.

Oh and a flat tax wouldn't work when it comes to manufacturing... How the fuck could a manufacturer afford to pay 15% on product components??? by the time the fucking product hits the shelf the taxation on the product would exceed the products value.

The only solution to that would be to - DING DING DING - give a company a tax break on their components - in which progressives would STILL BITCH.

It would be best if progressives stay the fuck out of economics and taxation because they know absolutely nothing about the ideas.
