Those Flashbulb Moments Switch on Our Lights

Many people report having flashbulb memories of the above, along with the 1986 Challenger explosion, the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the Oklahoma City bombing, the death of Princess Diana, the Columbine High School massacre, and the South Asian tsunami of 2004.
Now everywhere you look there are hurricane relief efforts. Web sites from Google to Amazon to Dictionary.com have links to donate to the victims. People are opening their homes, volunteering and sending cash and bottled water. Schools are sweeping aside paperwork and admitting displaced children.
Our shared reaction to these flashbulb events should activate a light bulb for our leaders. Look at all those yellow ribbons! We are a nation of doers, and we want something consequential to do. The ration cards and victory gardens of the greatest generation could become today's energy conservation, environmental and victim relief efforts. Can you see the light?
