While the Washington Post has been diligently digging into relatively innocent high school pranks by Mitt Romney, they’ve spent the last few years diligently ignoring President Obama’s far more controversial high school days.

Obama, by all accounts, was a habitual drug user in high school. He tried cocaine, he admits in Dreams From My Father; he “tried drugs enthusiastically.” The Chicago Tribune reported back in 2007 that Obama thanked the “Choom Gang” in his high school yearbook; “chooming” was Hawaiian slang for smoking pot. The Honolulu Advertiser reported that Obama’s senior portrait “prominently displayed … A package of ‘Zig-Zag’ rolling papers and a matchbook.” One of Obama’s close friends was arrested for drug possession during high school.

In his memoir, Obama talked about routinely getting high. “Junkie. Pothead,” he wrote. “That’s where I’d been headed: the final, fatal role of the young would-be black man.” But, according to Obama, he only got high because he was contemplating deep matters: drugs could “push questions of who I was out of my mind.”

Obama told students in 2007 that this activity constituted “goofing off” and “wasting time”:

"I will confess to you that I was kind of a goof off in high school as my mom reminded me," Obama said. "I went to high school in Hawaii, so there's a lot of opportunity to goof off because the weather is really good all the time …

"You know, I made some bad decisions …. You know, got into drinking and experimenting with drugs. There was a whole stretch of time where I didn't apply myself. It wasn't until I got out of … high school, and went to college that I started realizing, man, I wasted a lot of time.”

The New York Times, however, went out of its way to find Obama’s classmates to testify that drugs played only a “bit part” in Obama’s youth. Yet Obama would later brag on the campaign trail that he “inhaled frequently … that was the point.”

During his high school years, Obama hung out with communist radical Frank Marshall Davis; in 2007, the Los Angeles Times reported that during his high school days, “he felt the first stirrings of anger toward whites. He says he also delved into black nationalism.” He was “offended or even enraged when white classmates adopted black street slang or revealed their underlying consciousness of his race by going out of their way to tell him how much they admired a black musician or athlete.”

Flashback: Obama

I can't imagine how sad or desparate any media source must be to run stories about what a candidate did at high school, nor how sad and desperate you must be to post it.

My first reaction on seeing this threads is that people figure there aren't any really important issues they'd like to take the candidate to task on.

This wasn't high school..He was in college and is what HE wrote in his books about himself

There are not too many of us that would stand up to scrutiny if we were judged by our actions from the time we were 14 to 20.

Did you say that in the Romney thread about his high school days?

Yes, he did. Flat out admitted that he had done dumb things and wasted valuable time, and that it was not a wise thing for anyone to do. So he used his own experiances as an object lesson for those reading his book. Being honest about the foolishness of youth is hardly a vice.

So what?

If he'd killed his entire family with a blunt axe or started a club torturing kittens you might have a point - otherwise this thread says a lot more about you than it does about him.

And yes, I'd say exactly the same if this thread was about Romney.

Haven't even gone to those threads. Don't care about the foolishness that Romney did in his high school days. Do care about the reversals he has done on important issues that impact me. His pandering to the 'Conservative' wing of the GOP does not impress me at all favorably.

I am thinking the reason for the article and the thread is to show how stupid the Obama campaign is being by attacking Romney for something he supposedly did in high school.

While the accusations toward Romney aren't adding up, Obama did admit all this in his book, which he wrote to help us understand him, right? Heck, some went way back to Rick Perry's youth to find words painted on a rock that had been tipped over and they tried to use it to accuse him of racism.

I feel like I know more about the Republican candidates' past than I do about our president. But I will vote according to what I've seen in the last couple years.

well good for you then..because the Romey thread was on hearsay..

.

Not that I would vote for Romney or today's whacked-out GOP, but a stupid thing he did in college just doesn't matter that much to me. If we had specific accounts of Obama's or any other politician's behavior during their college years, I strongly suspect we'd find plenty of dirt.

Political gamesmanship, yawn.

You started this train wreck thread - you might as well try and defend it.

I don't have to defend anything to your whining ass..

Stephanie -

No you don't. I suspect either running away or pretending it is all someone elses fault is your best strategy at this point.

Do you have another handle you can use for the next couple of weeks?

Not to be a smartass...but I don't care what he did while in school or college outside of questionable affiliations with Marxist and leftist professors.
I care about a real unemployment rate which is still in double digits...I care about a 24% underemployment rate even more. I care about part-time people who need full-time but can't fine one.
All the while - Obama when asked about the laughably wrong 8.2% number said this "I think it is encouraging...it is good to see America consistently adding jobs"
This shows how much he cares about the unemployed and the underemployed.

I agree
there was a purpose for my madness in posting this thread.
