WINTER HAVEN — A Kissimmee woman is recovering after being shot in the chest Tuesday night by a Polk County sheriff’s deputy who intervened in a domestic violence altercation in Winter Haven.

Lindsay Erin Collins, 25, was in stable but critical condition Wednesday afternoon at Lakeland Regional Health Medical Center, sheriff’s officials said. She faces multiple charges, including two counts of attempted first degree murder and aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer.

Collins is accused of breaking into the home of her ex-boyfriend, Christopher Ingram, 36, and threatening him and a male roommate with an eight-inch knife.

At some point during the altercation, Ingram and his roommate, Kenneth Musselman, fled the home on 16th Street N.E., giving Ingram time to call 911, Polk Sheriff Grady Judd said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference.

Deputy Lance Turley arrived at the scene at 10:35 p.m. and began interviewing Ingram. That’s when Collins bolted from the house in the direction of Ingram and Turley, arms raised, holding the knife, Judd said.

Turley fired a single shot, striking Collins in the chest, he said.

“If it weren’t for the deputy intervening, Chris (Ingram) would have easily lost his life,” Judd said. ”(Collins) ran past a marked patrol car, knife in hand. If you believe her text (to Ingram earlier that night), she intended to commit murder and possibly suicide.”

In addition to attempted murder and aggravated assault, Collins is charged with armed burglary and felony criminal mischief.

Once released from the hospital, she will be transferred to the Polk jail infirmary to complete her recovery, Judd said.

Turley, 30, has been with the Sheriff’s Office for nine years. He is suspended with pay while undergoing mandatory counseling, standard procedure in a shooting. The incident remains under investigation by the PCSO and the State Attorney’s Office.

According to the Sheriff’s Office, Ingram and Collins broke up about a month ago after dating for approximately two years. She sent Ingram threatening texts Tuesday night, suspecting Ingram of dating another woman.

Through text messaging, Collins said, “I will hunt you all down. I will kill her, take her life and mine. You can watch, I don’t care,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Collins left Bartow in a gold-colored Chevrolet Malibu, arriving at Ingram’s home shortly after 10 p.m., according to the PCSO and Ingram, whose 911 conversation was made public.

Collins broke into Ingram’s home through a back door and started ransacking the place, eventually chasing the two occupants with a knife, the Sheriff’s Office said. There was no other woman at the house, as Collins suspected.

Musselman hid in a boat in the backyard, while Ingram fled to call 911. He told a dispatcher that Collins appeared intoxicated.

Collins left the house and started damaging Ingram’s parked truck with the knife, the Sheriff’s Office said. She went back inside the home and emerged when Turley arrived.

Collins has been arrested twice — once in 2016 for battery on a woman, and again four years earlier for possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia, the PCSO said.
