Five Richest Counties Are In the DC Area

High-level government employees - often married to one another - and highly-paid government consultants (usually military or civilian retirees), as well as contractors.

What a witch's brew of worthlessness!

All paid for by the American taxpayer.

...and to think in the 1950s and 1960s, Detroit lead the nation in per capita income.

If you reduce the payroll bloat there will be that much more tax money to fund government projects and programs. Hell you could probably fund bases on Mars by getting rid of 5% of the fat in the government.

No surprise.
When your main industry is stealing from the entire country, from those who have to actually produce then you have no risk.
No surprise that the two most affluent predominantly black counties are situated right next door to daddy government, too.

And what would those counties be? (include source)

Prince George's and Charles though Charles may not be mostly black on paper -- yet.

Howard County, MD is "D.C. area" to people who don't live in the D.C. area and to people in Howard County. who don't want to refer to themselves as Baltimore area or rural dwellers. Loudoun County, VA is pretty much the same, getting a "honorary" DC area "pass" because it contains Dulles Airport. A West Coast correlate (given the size of the places) is thinking of Santa Barbara as being in the Los Angeles area.

It's worth noting that the main reason D.C. area counties are relatively well off is because, on the whole, most people in those counties have relatively decent jobs and because five of the top six most highly educated counties in the U.S. are also in the D.C. area. Believe it or not, people with advanced degrees earn more than people without advanced degrees. The consequence of that is that income inequality is less pronounced than it is in other parts of the country.

FWIW, I'm not disagreeing with your claim. Just asking for corroboration of it because the claim isn't supported by any of the content in the article you cited in your OP. (I live in Kalorama and grew up in Spring Valley, so I know you are correct about PG being the wealthiest predominantly black county in the U.S.)

First of all, there are the thieves and there are the aiders and abettors, accomplices.
  • Thieves --> These are the principals who obtain "pork barrel" spending, legislative "carve outs," and tax breaks from the WH and Congress. Most such people don't even live in the D.C. area.
  • Accomplices -->These are the folks who comprise a subset of the 535 members of Congress, the current member of the WH, and the senior-level appointees who craft regulations to benefit themselves or their cronies.
The overwhelming majority of the remainder of the several million D.C. area residents are merely "regular" folks who have decent jobs. It is thus a mistake to conflate and/or confuse proximity to federal power with being party to or a beneficiary of the "illicit"/inequitable wheeling and dealing that goes on the halls, offices, clubs and living rooms of holders of federal power.

Those are anomalies.
PG and Charles counties are entire counties made up of middle class dwellers, not celebrities or anomalously affluent.
PG and Charles are directly and indirectly a result of Fed growth.

Most Howard county residents work either in DC or in locales affected by the growth of the Fed gov.

I included the info as an editorial illustrating an additional socialistic impact of an out-of-control growing Fed.
I live in PG and have been watching this development for almost fifty years.

Those of us 'regular' folks are essentially money launderers. I even tried to list that on FB as my occupation but they wouldn't allow it.

Money laundering is the process of making ill gotten gains appear to have been legitimately earned.
  • By what notions do you imagine "regular folks" living in the D.C. area have wages and earning predominantly comprised of unduly earned funds money that they "in effect" launder and make legit?
  • For whom benefit and whose money do you conceive they launder the money that is their primary source of income?
Don't get me wrong, to the extent you mean firm owners whose companies have only the federal government as a client (or receive the vast majority of of their revenue from federal contracting), I understand the concept you've expressed; however, most people in the D.C. area are not owners of such organizations.

anomalously affluent.

What does "anomalously affluent" mean? The black woman who served as my parents' butler and my and my siblings' part-time governess was married to a black doctor. Is what you mean by anomalous? I know that as a kid it struck me as strange that a doctor would wed a woman who struck me as mostly a maid. Of course, at the time, I didn't understand that she actually managed the two other women who worked in our home.

Is that what you call the "Gold Coast" (D.C.), Links, Hellians, SPP, Century Club, and "Jack and Jill" crowd? Is it anomalous that black doctors, attorneys, business owners, accountants, and other black professionals earn fine livings?

Though I've not conducted a formal study to find out, I suspect that the presence of Howard University in D.C. has a lot to do with the D.C. area having a large quantity of affluent blacks. After all, Howard has a very long legacy of world renowned graduates: Pat Harris, Vernon Jordan, Thurgood Marshall, Toni Morrison, and Elijah Cummings being some who come readily to my mind.

Okay.

The federal government was at the forefront of hiring and promoting educated Negroes, without regard to their race. Hence, many of such reached relatively high levels of government service in and around the District. I'm speaking of the pre - affirmative action time.
