CHARLOTTE, N.C.—First lady Michelle Obama opened the Democratic National Convention on Tuesday with a deeply personal speech connecting the economic struggles of average workers, including those of her parents, to the policies her husband, Barack Obama, has pursued as president.

Her nationally televised address was a portrait of the U.S. economy from the view of working people enduring personal struggles, including Mrs. Obama’s father, a city water plant worker with multiple sclerosis. Mrs. Obama used the story of her father, and Mr. Obama’s bank-worker grandmother, to explain the president’s support for equal-pay laws, his signature health-insurance law and student loans.

Then there was this: “If Mitt was Santa Claus, he’d fire the reindeer and outsource the elves,” Strickland says in one of a series of sharp quips aimed at the Republican nominee for president.

“Mitt Romney has so little economic patriotism that even his money needs a passport. It summers on the beaches of the Cayman Islands and winters on the slopes of the Swiss Alps,” Strickland says.

He says any person who aspires to be president “should keep both his treasure and his heart in the United States of America.”

Shortly after Strickland’s talk, Lilly Ledbetter, a women’s activist, talked about inequality in pay between men and women doing similar jobs. Women earn just 77 cents for every dollar men make, she told the crowd. “Maybe 23 cents doesn’t sound like a lot to someone with a Swiss bank account,” she told the crowd to roars. But, she said, it means a lot to average women.

All of sudden we are creating these requirements ?

You bastards are the saddest group of desperate losers.

Wha wha wha....

Maybe Mitt could get some extra cash by putting his wife to work in a 300K/year job that isn't even necessary...just like Barack did....

It's been pointed out that women in the Obama administration earn less than the men. I guess I just don't hate women enough to vote for Obama.

(Of course, the disparity in pay has nothing to do with discrimination, except in the minds of ignorant, sexist, liberal, shithead bigots.)

Did she happen to mention it's been that way for 40 years and you dumbasses haven't figured out how to fix it yet. Or that Obama has the same issue in his administration ?

I figured not.

I wonder if everyone at the convention had their nose rings before or after they entered.

Maybe Barack will have Michelle give the conciliatory speech on election night.

She can talk about how she's anxious to get back to Chicago.

What makes you think Mitt would put his wife to work in a 300K/year job that isn't even necessary when he could afford to put his wife to work in a 600K/year job that isn't even necessary?

300K/year.......... If I was Ann, I'd be insulted.

Mitt's income is 415K..... per week!

She did a good job but was one of the other 30 threads about her speech not good enough for you to give your partisan report card?

Laws that make money for lawyers are not good for the middle class.

No, that's how YOU see it. Other people might agree with you but others do not.
