Everybody here who knows that the increase is due to the expiration of the "payroll tax holiday" that temporarily reduced FICA taxes please raise your hand.

The payroll tax holiday was by law supposed to expire during President Obama's 1st term. He extended the tax holiday during the depths of the recession in order to not further damage the economy. His extension was set to expire at the beginning of this year, fiscal cliff or no fiscal cliff.
