Makes Dennis Prager's insight all the more prescient....
....the following from his book "Still The Best Hope."
1. Because the Left relies on feelings and intentions, wisdom and the existing moral value system dont count for much. The comparison with conservatives would be the reliance on data and experience, and tradition. Recall the Left-wing baby boomer war-cry: Never trust anyone over thirty! Consider the meaning: There is nothing to be learned from anyone older than thirty hence, the old dead white men theme.
a. Note how this morphs into the adulation of youth. Therein lies the choice: youth, or wisdom. And the result is what our universities have become, no longer the repository of knowledge, instead, support for Marxist ideas, nuclear disarmament, beliefs that America was no different from the Soviet Union, sympathetic views toward Mao, Ho Chi Minh, Castro, and support for a whole host of Left-wing memes.
2. Another result of the centrality of emotion and feeling to Leftism is the overwhelming desire to be loved. A good general rule is that one should seek to be loved by ones peers, as in ones spouse, and ones friends. But even within that circle, and certainly in more remote circles, one should first seek to be respected. Consider the result when parents, in raising their children, seek love rather than respect. Frequently, in the Liberal world, the roles of parents and teachers has shifted from that of authority figures to peers. When one seeks to be loved by those over whom one must exercise authority, one compromises the values necessary to do the proper job.
3. The feelings-based nature of liberalism helps explain why people on the Left are much more likely to claim to be offended when faced with which they differ. Not, I disagree, but I am offended! When are people offended? When their feelings are hurt. A pro-choice woman is offended by the pro-life position, ostensibly because her feelings are more worthwhile than the objective worth of a human fetus.
a. Political correctness is also based on not hurting peoples feelings.
b. Complaint about Senator Joseph McCarthy often center around how abusive he was to communists .again, feelings.
c. In January 2005, at a Conference on Diversifying the Science & Engineering Workforce sponsored by the National Bureau of Economic Research, Larry Summers sparked controversy with his discussion of why women may have been underrepresented "in tenured positions in science and engineering at top universities and research institutions". Yup .hurt feelings.
d. Again, the question of importance to the Left is Does this statement or position hurt anyones feelings? rather than Is the statement true?
