(Salon.com) — Bradley Manning, the 22-year-old U.S. Army Private accused of leaking classified documents to WikiLeaks, has never been convicted of that crime, nor of any other crime. Despite that, he has been detained at the U.S. Marine brig in Quantico, Virginia for five months — and for two months before that in a military jail in Kuwait – under conditions that constitute cruel and inhumane treatment and, by the standards of many nations, even torture. Interviews with several people directly familiar with the conditions of Manning’s detention, ultimately including a Quantico brig official (Lt. Brian Villiard) who confirmed much of what they conveyed, establishes that the accused leaker is subjected to detention conditions likely to create long-term psychological injuries.
Since his arrest in May, Manning has been a model detainee, without any episodes of violence or disciplinary problems. He nonetheless was declared from the start to be a “Maximum Custody Detainee,” the highest and most repressive level of military detention, which then became the basis for the series of inhumane measures imposed on him.
From the beginning of his detention, Manning has been held in intensive solitary confinement. For 23 out of 24 hours every day — for seven straight months and counting — he sits completely alone in his cell. Even inside his cell, his activities are heavily restricted; he’s barred even from exercising and is under constant surveillance to enforce those restrictions. For reasons that appear completely punitive, he’s being denied many of the most basic attributes of civilized imprisonment, including even a pillow or sheets for his bed (he is not and never has been on suicide watch). For the one hour per day when he is freed from this isolation, he is barred from accessing any news or current events programs. Lt. Villiard protested that the conditions are not “like jail movies where someone gets thrown into the hole,” but confirmed that he is in solitary confinement, entirely alone in his cell except for the one hour per day he is taken out.
In sum, Manning has been subjected for many months without pause to inhumane, personality-erasing, soul-destroying, insanity-inducing conditions of isolation similar to those perfected at America’s Supermax prison in Florence, Colorado: all without so much as having been convicted of anything. And as is true of many prisoners subjected to warped treatment of this sort, the brig’s medical personnel now administer regular doses of anti-depressants to Manning to prevent his brain from snapping from the effects of this isolation.
…
UPDATE: I was contacted by Lt. Villiard, who claims there is one factual inaccuracy in what I wrote: specifically, he claims that Manning is not restricted from accessing news or current events during the proscribed time he is permitted to watch television. That is squarely inconsistent with reports from those with first-hand knowledge of Manning’s detention, but it’s a fairly minor dispute in the scheme of things.

They let him out of his cell for an hour? Fuck that! 24/7 in an 8'-10' cell for the rest of his natural life would be fine with me.

Wow...that must be tough

Who leaked the story about his jail conditions?

You really could have just read the OP... Interviews with several people directly familiar with the conditions of Manning’s detention, ultimately including a Quantico brig official (Lt. It's right there in in the post. Jeeeeez.

You always say you like to wait for ALL facts before forming an opinion.

Considering this kid hasn't had his day in court yet, and until being convicted he is presumed innocent, how is it that you've come to such a hasty and extreme conclusion?

Because he has admitted his crime. He says he's guilty. Works for me.

A confession is not proof of guilt, though. It COULD be, but there are also many factors that could lead to someone "confessing", where there may not actually be any guilt at all.

The burden of proof is on the prosecution to prove if, when, how, why, he did it.

I'm not saying he didn't do it or that I think he didn't, but there's a reason we have the legal system that we have in this country.

Sounds a little strange - if Manning is a US Army Private, why would he be held in a Marine brig? Someone else has posted here that Manning is being held at Ft. Drum. Also the article first says he's been confined for five months and paragraph or so later says he's been confined for seven months.

Manning is no different from any other prisoner being held until trial. Considering what he's been accused of (and apparently admits to) solitary confinement is probably in order. As for "psychological damage" he had to be delusional in the first place to think he could get away with leaking secret documents.

constitution hater #1 - he hasn't been charged or convicted of anything

doesn't suprise me though as you are a dumb neocon bitch

This is a fine example of "over-doing" it. I wonder how people who are so eager to punish this guy severely thought about Oliver North...who really did commit treason.

she hates the constitution and advocates mob justice. just ignore her

he hasn't been charged of anything much less convicted and hes a us citizen, and people are totally willing to throw his rights away. what a sad day for this country.

What I don't understand is why they would give access to such sensitive information to a private.

Shouldn't that be reserved for officers and senior enlisted personnel?

Most of the information he had access to should not have been classified secret.
