Feds approve coastal fireworks

June 30, 2011

Federal regulators on Tuesday gave the green light to July Fourth fireworks shows along the San Luis Obispo, Monterey and Santa Cruz county coasts.

Activists have argued that explosions from popular annual pyrotechnics shows along the coast disturb marine life, especially harbor seals and California sea lions. [Fresno Bee]

Under federal environmental law, disturbances from exploding displays of fireworks are serious enough to count as “harassment,” which means “any act of torment, pursuit or annoyance” to marine life.

Officials estimate that 6,170 California sea lions and 1,065 harbor seals could be affected from the noise and fallout of fireworks, but are not expected to suffer injury or death.

Loud sound bursts and pressure waves created by exploding shells appear to cause more disturbance than the illumination, according to a 2002 federal study. As the fireworks displays progress, “most marine mammals and birds generally evacuate the impact area.”

Another study for the Walt Disney Corp. found that Florida fireworks displays left detectable but negligible and apparently harmless amounts of barium, strontium and antimony in nearby waterways.

Regulators authorized 20 fireworks displays between Santa Cruz and Cambria. The fireworks over Moonstone Beach in Cambria are estimated to impact 60 California sea lions and 60 harbor seals.

Amazing! The federal Government needs to give us permission to celebrate our independence. Anyone think we need another revolution?

Next thing you know boating will be outlawed as its a danger to marine life. Then automobiles because it pollutes the air the wildlife breaths. Soon walking will be a danger to insects.

Thank-you massa -- Thank-you..

Can't tell you how much damage those marine mammals do to the docks and boats that they've squatted on.. They prettty much own the docks there. Ought to be fireworks 4 times a day there to send them back to nature from the "good life".

You're generalizing. They're not giving permission to celebrate the 4th. They are giving permission to set off fireworks on the ocean. Believe it or not people can celebrate without fireworks displays over water.

Flopper:

Not generalizing.. you remember the lyrics "it never rains in California" ?????

After March -- ALL of california becomes a fire hazard. By the 4th of July, it would be like smoking in a hay stack.. So almost ALL of the July 4th fireworks are over bodies of water.. Mainly the coast and the bays..

Spin much? Your article says the Federal Government is allowing the use of exploding fireworks along the coast. It makes not mention of the Federal Government "allowing" the celebration of the 4th of July.

You have a good point although I don't think fireworks are needed to celebrate the 4th. There are many towns across the country that have cancelled fireworks displays due the financial crunch.

Why do you want the feds to tell you how to celebrate?

Why are you so willing to roll over and let someone in DC tell you how to celebrate your independence?

Two weeks ago when I was in Intercourse, Pa., they had a 50 minute continuous fireworks display to celebrate their Heritage Days festival.
Those Amish communities are wealthy. Won't miss fireworks this 4th if I don't see them.

There is the fire hazard aspect too...I wonder if the same people posting here have ranted to their counties and/or states for not allowing them to buy their own fireworks in order to celebrate the 4th....
