a mutual defense pact. Germany only declared war on the States because of this.
Which gave FDR exactly what he wanted, involvement in the war in europe

German submarines were attacking American ships, including Navy ships and killing US Sailors. US flagged ships were being stopped, boarded and held for inspection in the open seas as close as the Carribean. War was coming with Germany one way or another.

Over 600 ships were sunk by Nazi submarines along our East coast all the way around to the Gulf of Mexico and even to the mouth of the Mississippi River. Thousands of our ships were sunk shipping arms and supplies to England. All prior to Adolph Hitler declaring war on the United States.

Demographic also played a large role in ending the depression. As for FDR- he instituted social security and it has become an under funded albatross and lured (unsophisticated) people into thinking the Government will take care of them in retirement.

Prior to SS, the elderly were on their own and at the mercy of the economy

Misinformation of the highest order. Soup lines had been in existence for four years when FDR was elected. Unemployment began dropping almost immediately when FDR took office. By the end of his second term real unemployment, meaning actual workers collecting paychecks had been reduced to 10%, closed banks had reopened, infrastructure was being built from coast to coast, the military was being equipped with the new and modern weapons that would win WWII and American agriculture was booming despite the devastating Dust Bowl Storms.

Wouldn't it be nice if every poster had to present actual and factual history in their posts?. But for the anti-FDRers this is about as good as it gets. Sort of make up the history as you go along. I don't believe the anti's were much alive when FDR was president because most people felt a lot of respect for FDR and might still be voting for him were he alive, I wonder if this is unusual in history for later generations to smite the most popular leaders when gone, or what?

Like many posts in this thread, an attempt is made to blame FDR on rhings that happened or may happen after his death. In this case, a suggestion is being made that a hundred years after FDR gave Americans Social Security, it may fail. Never mind the fact that hundreds of millions of Americans benefited, Congresses borrowed SS funds continuously, Congress repeatedly failed to make adjustments, etc.
Like saying bridges and runnels built 80 years ago are beginning to crumble and become obsolete so they should have never been built or start with. We don't want to blame ourselves and past generations for not keeping up with maintenance on them or failing to predict the increased usage over the years. We want to blame the originators and people who built them 80 years ago.

Oh FDR was despised by a minority of Americans at the time- while wildly popular with the vast majority of Americans.

FDR made mistakes- most importantly was ordering the internment of Japanese Americans.

But the contards don't despise him for that- many of them would happily applaud if Trump ordered the internment of Muslim Americans tomorrow.

They despise FDR for what he accomplishments as a liberal and as a Democrat.

FDR became President during the worst economic crisis in American history- and when he died- the United States was the most powerful country in the world- both economically and militarily.

The country went from a country on the verge of civil war(farmers were already staging armed protests), with rampant hunger, bankruptcies and poverty- to the largest increase of wealth among the poor and middle class in American history.

The critics like to say- well that was because of the war......but who paid for that war? The government.

World War 2 was the largest government spending program in American history- that spending stimulus drove the expansion the American middle class.

The Right will never forgive FDR for any of that.
