FBI probe of Petraeus' emails purportedly led to discovery of extramarital affair

"The FBI investigation that led to the discovery of CIA Director David Petraeus’ extramarital affair and his resignation Friday started when the agency began monitoring Petraeus’ email, Fox News has learned.

The agency was alerted that biographer Paula Broadwell, with whom Petraeus had the affair, may have had access to his personal email account.

The investigation began when someone reported suspicious emails allegedly from Broadwell to the FBI. The agency then determined that she allegedly had emailed a number of government employees. The FBI was at one point trying to determine whether any of the employees were being stalked, sources told Fox News.

Broadwell told Fox News earlier this year when talking about the biography “All In: The Education of General David Petraeus” that she met the four-star general when she was post-graduate student at Harvard and he came to the university to speak.
They kept in touch via email and ran into each other again when she came to Washington, Broadwell said on Don Imus’ Fox Business show.
“He gave me his card,” said Broadwell, who co-wrote the book. “We kept in touch.”
Broadwell also called Petraeus’ wife of 38 years, Holly Petraeus, “a wonderful military spouse.”

Source said the FBI investigation ended when the agency determined no criminal acts had been committed.

FBI spokesman Paul Bresson has declined to comment on the information that the affair had been discovered in the course of an investigation by the agency.

Petraeus resigned Friday after admitting to an extramarital affair with his biographer that was revealed over the course of an FBI investigation.

Petraeus, who turned 60 on Wednesday, met his wife when he was a cadet at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. She was the daughter of the academy superintendent. They have two children, and their son led an infantry platoon in Afghanistan.

Holly Petraeus also works in the Obama administration, for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Petraeus met with President Obama on Thursday before submitting his letter of resignation, which the president accepted. In a message to staff, Petraeus said he asked "to be allowed" to step down.

"After being married for over 37 years, I showed extremely poor judgment by engaging in an extramarital affair. Such behavior is unacceptable, both as a husband and as the leader of an organization such as ours," the retired four-star general said. "This afternoon, the President graciously accepted my resignation."

The move comes amid the unfolding controversy surrounding the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Libya. Scrutiny has fallen on a range of agencies including the CIA, and the director had been set to testify at hearings next week -- he is no longer expected to do so. But Petraeus, in his resignation message, cited strictly "personal reasons" surrounding the affair.

Obama, in a written statement, said Petraeus provided an "extraordinary service to the United States for decades."

The above article appears on Google immediately below a Google advertisement that inadvertently or otherwise asks: "Can you spot a fake."

The threshold observation is that "the birds and bees do it" and Washington and Ike and several presidents including, notably, JFK, did it and other Presidents and Generals did it and they were not relieved of duty, so why Petraeus? Why indeed!

Did he have an extra-marital affair. Probably.

Was he relieved for having an extra-marital affair? Probably not?

If the reason for his resignation was an extra-mairtal affair, who knew of it, other than people and agencies that have a vested interest in secrecyof all kind, including, perhaps, the weather.

Given the less than friendly relationship of the CIA and the FBI, has the FBI gained access to CIA electronics?

Was - is - the FBI authorized to spy on CIA personnel? Is the CIA authorized to spy on the FBI?

Was Petreaeus so naive as to give the relationship - if there was one - away by revealing it in E mails?

Did Broadwell commit an offense by Emailing someone in the FBI or elsewhere?

If Petraeus and Broadwell were carrying on a discrete sexual relationship, how might that affect national security?

Or provide a ground for Obama accepting the resignation of so valuable a person as Petraeus? Especially when Obama must have known there would be at least some criticism of his doing so?

Why didn't Obama give to Petraeus the same kind of warning that General Marshall gave to General Eisenhour, especially if Petraeus had afforded America the kind and the degree of service politicians such as McCain, but not Mullins, have accorded Petraeus?

Assuming Broadwell was Petraeus" other "love life", does the charge she had access to his Email
justify Obama in accepting the resignation of such a national asset as Petraeus?

    What
    moved,
    prompted,
    motivated,
    caused,
    or triggered
    Petraeus
    requesting
    he be permitted
    to resign?

    There was
    some happening,
    some untoward event,
    some non-fortuitous occurence
that set Petraeus" request in motion.

Without a disclosure of who or what
    forced the resignation
    the story will remain open.

    Who or what
    prompted Petraeus' request?

    Obama to Petraeus:
Either resign or I'll fire you and you can kiss your pension goodby.

He did the same thing to two EPA employees that put an explanation of what cap and trade was really going to do to this country.
Remove your web site or you'll be fired and you can kiss your pensions goodby.
    Blackmail becomes Obama.....

    Thanks for the response, Irish.

One poster has posed the possibility that the lady Dumped pETRAEUS and that he was stalking her with emails to the point she notified the FBI and others of his continued pursuit of her.

That's almost a plausible story, but she could have changed her email address.

If Petraeus had to resign, as seems to be the case, w
why couldn't Petraeus have been permitted to resign
    without a mea culpa?

Something that is critical to understanding the story is missing.
    I wonder what?
