i'm not a big gambler but i enjoy playing for fun on occasion...

i have done very well in black jack by just playing the odds but it gets harder to focus once you have a cocktail or three.

i enjoy roulette and 3 card poker because it doesn't take much focus. :coffee:

Having been a professional gambler for 10 years (wrote a book about it) Live Poker is the ONLY game where you're not playing against the House.

Start off with $2-4 and move up to $3-6 before going big time.

Patience, patience, and patience.

Limit, or no limit?
Play limit games until you think you've learned to spot "tells". Then try some local tournaments,

Remember, it's not so much the cards as the people you're playing against.

Are tournaments a rip off? That's why hubby plays....

Tournaments are simply a chance to play against a lot of other players. The house gets the same "rake" whether it's a single game or a tournament.

Well I guess my question was are you better off playing at a $2-$4 limit table vs. a tournament (you just but in and have to finish at a certain level to get a pay off)

That's why I'm just competent at poker, I'm an odds guy, can't read people to save my life.

I'm entirely too lazy to read people. I think it's a natural skill for some...
Ever see Rounders?
Love that movie!

Yep, home of the worst Russian accent ever, by Mr. Malkovich.

Any limit game is for what we dealers called "Grinders." They wait until they have "the nuts" something like A-10 or better in a Hold 'Em game. Or an opening pair in a Draw game - which are pretty hard to find these days. They almost totally do away with bluffing which is a huge part of a pro's arsenal.

As for tournaments, it depends upon what type. If it's a limit game, again it's for Grinders. If it's No Limit, Bluffers and Readers have the edge.

And, believe it or not - a lot of it is just plain luck. If you don't get the cards, it's hard to win no matter how good you are. Can't bluff if you don't get an occasional good hand.

I love him anyway.... another actor I love is in that movie too.... John Turturro but he doesn't play a major role... Matt Damon is probably my LEAST favorite actor in that movie!

I prefer to keep my money.

I did try casinos but it didn't take long to see where they get the money for those huge, gorgeous buildings. I like poker but really, casinos are boring.

Last time I went several years ago was Atlantic City - it was summer and wound up sitting on the boardwalk and eating and reading at Johnny Rockets most of the time! I like the horse racing. I was one of the only females in the horse racing/betting area and by far the youngest! That place is for old men!!! But still, I love it! :)

Black Jack is my favorite game. Go to casinos maybe 4 or 6 times a month here in U.S. and also play overseas.
I never split 20, always hit on 16 if dealer showing high, always double on 11.
Like to play one on one with the dealer or less player the better. Single or double deck only.
And you better know how to play when playing in high limits. Also learn how to RUN when you won.

You should know that it makes no difference how many decks are used.

Yes and No but it's easy to estimate what numbers has come up in a single deck. Compared to 4 or 5 deck. At high limits mostly 2 or single deck which most of the time the tide is in my favor.
