Father suggests teens seduce priests.

The conversation took an interesting turn, however, when the editor asked about the 78-year-old's work with sexual abuse perpetrators.

"People have this picture in their minds of a person planning to — a psychopath," Groeschel said. "But that’s not the case. Suppose you have a man having a nervous breakdown, and a youngster comes after him. A lot of the cases, the youngster — 14, 16, 18 — is the seducer."

Pressed for clarification, the New York State-based religious leader explained that kids looking for father figures might be drawn to priests to fill an emotional hole in their lives.

Furthermore, Groeschel expressed a belief that most of these "relationships" are heterosexual in nature, and that historically sexual relationships between men and boys have not been thought of as crimes.

"If you go back 10 or 15 years ago with different sexual difficulties — except for rape or violence — it was very rarely brought as a civil crime. Nobody thought of it that way... And I’m inclined to think, on [a priest's] first offense, they should not go to jail because their intention was not committing a crime."

:wtf:

In the mans defense he is a brain injury survivor.

He is not in his right mind.

I think the church should not have him performing anhy church duties

I love he suggests it's only 18 or 16 year olds getting molested when a lot of them are 12 or 10 or even less

OK, guys, time to ixnay with the celibate priesthood. It just creates super-icky situations. There is something damp underground-chamber wrong with grown males living their entire adult life without pussy. Wrong, unnatural, not even remotely Biblical. Seriously. The Catholics are just way-ass wrong on this one.

I remember that two of three parish priests of mine dies of AIDS. Two of three. They came to celebrate the last supper after taking it up the Hershey highway the night before.

That would be the problem. You cannot expect a man to be celibate his entire life and then actually attract normal people into the fold. Ask a man to give up sex, not going to happen. What you end up with is a priesthood that has attracted some very suspicious individuals.

It is interesting that when cases like this appear, people seem reasonable enough to blame the person and not the entire church, but when similar issues occur within Islam, Islam is blamed and not the person.

The weird relationship between religion and sexuality seems to be universal across all of the mainstream religions...rabbis, priests and imams seem to all have problems figuring out a code of conduct which respects others.

Really? I had not noticed that at all nor would I call it ‘reasonable’ to blame the individual but not put some of the onus on the church. Now, I do not blame the RELIGION, but I most certainly do blame the church and, in particular, the Catholic Church. I can’t really think of a case with Islam that mirrors the one concerning the catholic priests in the states so I don’t have anything to comment as far as the Muslim point you made. It would be different if the cases were isolated, indifferent to the system and the church was not trying to defend these animals. This is NOT the first priest that has stated the offenders should not go to prison. More importantly, the church was attempting to hide and protect these animals by moving them around. They directly caused more victims through their actions. To give the RCC a pass here is insanity.

FA Q2 -

You make a fair point - I think it is fair to blame the church, but not the entire religion. I think that is a better way of putting it.

The issue with Islam is something that comes up on a lot in the Middle East section, where some posters are completely obsessed with Mohamme's apparent paedophilia almost a millenium ago, while looking to whitewash paedophilia in some Christian churches today. I find that staggeringly hypcritical.

The repression of perfectly natural human sexuality inevitably leads to perverse sexual obsessions.

Anybody disagree?

Update: National Catholic Register has taken down the interview and Groeschel has offered this statement:

I apologize for my comments. I did not intend to blame the victim. A priest (or anyone else) who abuses a minor is always wrong and is always responsible. My mind and my way of expressing myself are not as clear as they used to be. I have spent my life trying to help others the best that I could. I deeply regret any harm I have caused to anyone.

Father Benedict Groeschel, American Friar, Claims Teens Seduce Priests In Some Sex Abuse Cases

I've met this Man. I cannot condone His position in the Interview. I do accept His apology. All abuse should be reported and investigated, and prosecuted when there is due cause.
