AL-KHALIL, (PIC)-- Members of the Fatah militias tried to disrupt a women's march in the West Bank city of Al-Khalil on Tuesday, Palestinian journalist Lama Khater has said.

The marches were designed to demand an end to the national split and the release of political prisoners detained in the West Bank.

”If not for intervention by the Speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council and Hamas MPs, clashes would have taken place between the protesters and the Fatah militias,” Khater said.

”We will remain present in the field,” Khater said addressing the militias. ”You will find us there during future events, as we're not scared of you, and the liberation of our mujahiden from your prisons is a great objective that gives us strength, certainty and confidence.”

The committee of families of political prisoners has condemned the disturbance and said it was proof of the ill intentions of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah and its lack of seriousness in national reconciliation. The committee said it also proved the political prisoners and their families are the most affected by the national split.
