Fat people, drinkers, smokers, engaging in "risky behavior" and must be punished...

Why social engineer in the first place?

And, if this is they way we are going - state social engineering on men practicing their free conscience, bad or good - what about alcohol? Warm water raw seafood? Hepatitis is a health issue. What about unprotected sex? Why can't we all get a punch card, for example, with number of times per year we are allowed to have unprotected sex unless we are trying to procreate? These are no less bizarre conditions than what is currently on the bill (as far as we can tell with the 'transparency').

Nanny government will ground you if you don't behave.

Why social engineer in the first place?

Because you are already being social engineered. And you are being social engineered in a manner that is unhealthy. That's the point.

Food companies have spent millions and millions of dollars to figure out what your physiological response is going to be when you see a picture of food. You think they are doing this by accident? Very, very smart people are paid an awful lot of money to figure out ways to stimulate your primal senses so you can eat more and more chemically-injected calories.

The so-called social engineering the government is proposing is being done to counteract the social engineering of companies who have a vested interest in making you do bad things to yourself. Why is it okay to allow companies to social engineer you in ways that are unhealthy but bad for the government to counteract such social engineering to help you avoid unhealthy behavior?

I don't deny that there is social engineering already, at all. The cigarette tax is one great example.

But the examples you provide are different than taxes. I still have a choice. I imagine you will argue that I really don't with the psychology behind much of marketing's tactics and perhaps for some, that is the case. As I rarely watch television, listen to the radio, or even pay attention to any print ads, etc. I have made the choice to avoid as much influence as I can. I don't frequent fast food joints, I rarely buy/eat junk food (chips, etc.), I'm into few fads - my choice.

You are quite the sagacious geek.

By your reasoning then, you have a choice whether or not you want to pay the tax. If you want to pay the tax, buy junk food. If you don't, don't buy it. Simple as that.

LOL. You're too kind. Not really all that much, though - 'Uniquely Normal' as I always say. In fact, once I am made aware of a marketing tactic, my oppositional nature to manipulation sets in and I dig in. I have a choice to succumb to manipulation, avoid it, or oppose it. It's the strong stubborn gene in me ;) and it's a choice to freely live my conscience.

But I do drink Diet Coke just for the taste of it. ;)

Diet Coke is too radical for me. I like to stick to water. It's rather neutral. It is good to buck the system at times.

You are right. A lot of people do get drawn in with subliminal advertising. It is not much different than politics. A lot of people have no problem stating what they think they believe. When confronted to defend their position, they can't. All they know is what they have seen and absorb, either from t.v. radio, talk radio, or some other venue.

Spot on. And I get back to one of my biggest gripes: we do not focus nearly enough, hell not at all in many cases, on teaching the importance of critical thought to our students. It is one of the most versatile skills for an individual.

And, you are just un-American (;)) if you don't like Coke. And don't give me any of that Pepsi bullshit. Only pinko commies drink or even like Pepsi. Period.

Male and critical thinking... Is that an oxymoron? :eusa_whistle: I digress. :eusa_angel:

Critical thinking certainly has its place. Most of the time, people don't appreciate the process of solving the Rubik's Cube. They just want the problem fixed. They don't really care how it is fixed. They just don't want to hear about it anymore, from whatever 30 second happy meal venue their mind is receiving transmission from.

The give me we are entitled generation is still with us. What it boils down to, is this...

"Those who would give up Essential Liberty to purchase a little Temporary Safety deserve neither Liberty nor Safety." Many people attribute that quote to Franklin, when it was Richard Jackson who is the author. Be that as it may, I believe that the aforementioned quote aptly summarizes the overall attitude of Joe and Mary Q. Public.

I do drink Coke products on occasion. I have drunk Pepsi before. I don't look good in pink, so that nefarious commie motif is out.

LOL. Thanks for the historical info - I was one who thought it was Franklin, too.

On the "entitled generation", have you ever heard of "helicopter parents"? A generation of parents have created a generation who is so babied and coddled that their emotional maturity has been delayed several years. It's enabling the entitled mentality, IMO.

I have heard the term 'helicopter parents' before. That is an excellent point. I do have black helicopters that do circle my home on a regular basis. I wonder if there is any correlation. :eusa_think:

Most people do equate Franklin with that quote. Knowing about Richard Jackson is just the geek in me coming out. Some people have a passion for Organic Chemistry, and others have a passion for history, reading, writing, and non-pink apparel.

I'm a pinko commie. Sometimes.

I am also a smoker and pay extra for health insurance. I'll bet all health insurance co.'s ask that question when you apply. I've used my health insurance once for an appendictomy. I have paid far more for insurance than I have needed.

Socialism/Communism will only divide the people further. Yea lets get angry with those stupid fat people and make them pay or lets get angry with those filthy smokers and make them pay too! Those damn soda drinkers are gonna pay next! And so and so on...Until one day they come for you too. People in this country really need to start contemplating whether or not Socialism/Communism is worth gambling on. This is how all totalitarian states begin. Pitting citizen against fellow citizen is a common tactic for Socialist/Communists. Never ever buy into that whole "But it's for your own Good" stuff either. Let the people drink soda if they want to. Get the h*ll out of their lives. Think America! Think!

The only thing that's going to turn this country around is tough times.
I really hope you are not right, but the more I see from folks, the more I wonder what will actually make them snap out of it. [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0x-fkSYDtUY"]Snap out of it![/ame]
