Fat Ho Burgers opens in Waco, but not without debate

by John Cuoco

WACO - Waco's newest, but most controversial burger joint opened on Tuesday.

Fat Ho Burgers on 11th street in North Waco was causing a ruckus even before it opened because of its name.

Where did the name come from? The restaurant's owner Lakita Evans explained. "Sometimes black people, when they see something they'll say woo that is a big ho, that ho right there is tight," she said. "So it's catchy, like that."

The 23-year-old Evans put herself through college and opened the spot with her own money. Her grand opening on Tuesday was a success, at one point she ran out of burgers because so many people came in.

"We plan on being open for a long time," Evans said.

When I lived in Pendleton the donut shop across the street from the courthouse, where everybody in town picked up donuts after the bars closed on Saturday nights and all the attorneys, judges, cops went for their coffee and donut fixes, was called "Up Your Donut".

Eventually, the city made the owners change it, but it was named that for quite a while. Now it's up WITH donuts, lol.

I guess controversy is good for buisness. I wonder what a "Fat Ho" burger is like though.

Anyone from Waco?

Hell it's just barely legal to dance or drink alcohol in Waco. It use to be the buckle of the Baptist bible belt. This has gotta be a shocker for the community.
