Farmer on NPR said he couldn't find an American who would pick fruit...

Question. How much does this farmer pay a fruit picker to pick one box of fruit?

Obviously, just enough to entice an illegal alien, but not enough to entice an American who has other employment options.

Solution. Pay your workers more, enough so someone can actually live off what you are paying him, maybe enough for groceries, rent, utilties, with a little extra left to go to the movies on Saturday.

The "enticement" is "just enough" for a worker who, at the time of accepting the job, doesn't have an alternative that provides them with greater utility.

There're other factors involved.
  • If one has no job and needs a job, whatever the farmer was paying still is income one didn't have before taking the job.
  • The farmer is in business to make profits for himself, not to employ others or make them "profitable."
  • Authorized workers who cannot get a job working with the farmer because he employs unauthorized laborers have legal recourse. They need only report that the farmer is using unauthorized workers.

Enough complaints, fines and continued non-compliance with U.S. labor laws could conceivably drive the farmer out of business, but as the complaint-filing worker isn't in the first place employed by the farmer, s/he loses no wages if the farmer exits the marketplace.
  • That same outcome -- the farmer exiting the marketplace -- may result if the farmer is forced to pay higher wages. It's quite possible that if the farmer were to increase the wage he pays, his profits might suffer to the point that he can't live off of the revenue he collects. (Farm products are commodities.) If the farmer cannot obtain sufficient (by his definition of the word) profit, he will exist the marketplace and find a different, suitably profitable use for his resources. Accordingly, authorized workers may find themselves in no better position as a consequence of the farmer having to pay higher wages -- for laborers seeking employment, a non-existent employer is neither better nor worse than one with whom they refuse to accept the wage offered..
While one can make the case you have from a normative economics standpoint, as a matter of positive economics it holds no water.

Do the remarks above imply I'm taking the farmer's side. Yes, but not in the way one might think. I ascribe to laissez faire economic principles and it so happens that in this instance, those principles favor the farmer. That said, I don't have the view I do expressly for the sake of favoring the farmer.

It's probably worth noting that the U.S.was created in large part as a place for entrepreneurs to thrive. Consequently and even these days, everything about the American "system" is geared toward providing the greatest returns to business owners. Quite simply, to the extent one is unwilling or unable (no matter why) to engage in trade as an entrepreneur, one is necessarily and from "square one" at a disadvantage in the American economic marketplace. The people who are most disadvantaged are, the folks whose labor returns the least amount of revenue, and that is almost certainly farm workers.

Illegal aliens don't need that. They live 12 to an apartment, eat rice and beans, and send the rest of their money to their families in Mexico or Central America.

So, the farmer wants us to let in illegal aliens so he doesn't have to pay a living wage for an American.

So, why are the Democrats AGAINST a living wage for American workers?

This is why Trump won the election, because American workers realized the Democrats have abandoned them.
Republicans oppose migrants picking fruit and paying a living wage

if we heard the same story they discussed paying 12 to 15 an hour and yes americans would work 40 hours but the farmer needs people willing o work longer days and more days in a row....harvest does not wait for weekends....

Yeah, unfortunately the fed only essentially controls two main things, or is responsible for two main things.

National security and inflation. Without the cheap labor, inflation will go up and potentially sky rocket.

That is why RINOS have been soft when it comes to enforcing immigration laws. We know why democrats do.

That is the situation. It is difficult one too. No easy answers.

Republicans oppose migrants picking fruit and paying a living wage
Americans should oppose "migrants" (illegal mexicans) picking fruit and a living wage is impossible when illegal mexicans will pile into one house and live way below American standards of living getting cash under the table, which makes the market pay way too little for a "living wage."

Democrats/communists and GOP fuckers have been allowing illegal mexicans to invade and drive down wages to the point where Americans cannot make a living in the depressed market. The Commie Democrat solution is to steal the means of production. You should all be executed.

No knee 3 is a lie. Many get reported regularly, letters were even sent to people years ago from the government even, no help at all. This post is a perfect excample of an explanation from a person who has never been out doing WORK. Farmers likely get more welfare then anyone else in this country. They get welfare for growing corn for fuel and anshit ton of tax breaks. Now, you are makeing the case for them that they need slaves to pick strawberries?

Commie dems bitch about low wages, but are happy to open the floodgates and let illegal mexicans come in and illegally work, driving down wages.

I think we need to go ahead and drop the minimum wage to $2.00 per hour.

Entire cities (ESTL STL DET.....) full of young un-employed sucking housing, food stamps, utilities, Welfare etc. For generations now. There's your workers. Time to break the cycle.
I agree. Hard work on the farms would do these young people a lot of good. Empty out the ghettos and put them in shanty towns. They can learn again that life is better when you work hard and pay your own way.
A simple question for you....what if they don't what to leave the "ghettos"? What if they don't want to be put in shanty towns?

Do we force them?

Maybe built shanty towns and remind them with entry signs that "Work Sets you Free"?

Farmers will end up having to raise their wages to find more productive workers. More pay equals more productivity...less pay equals less productivity. Econ 101...that's if the illegals are gone.

Why do they have to be illegal? Why can't they come in legally, stay in employer provided barracks type housing, and go home off season?

I don't care if we let MORE people in if they're vetted and are working, tracked, abide by the law and aren't voting for commies.
That was called the Bracero Program.

The legal migrants get $12.50/hr

not a lot, but when you have no education and don't speak the language..

npr interviewed an illegal that's been her 28 years, that lazy fuck still can't speak English.
The way you type you have no master of the English language either..

The pay is crap, the working conditions are crap but more than anything else, its just plain hard work.

That's why American's won't do it.

Thanks to RWNJs, family farms are going under. But, have no fear because pino trump's 1% buddies are right there, ready to buy them out for pennies on the dollar.

.

Once again this goes right over your head, I would do it for $30 an hour. You pay enough you will get people to do it

The Democrat Party's embrace of blacks cost them the South.

The Democrat Party's embrace of illegal aliens cost them the Midwest and the Rust Belt.

With the Western states already solidly Republican, that leaves the Democrats with the Pacific Coast, the Northeast, and Hawaii.
You think those illegals are here without jobs? Agribusiness is the leading employer of illegals....Yet you want to claim it democrats? Are all those people democrats in agribusiness? I doubt very seriously they are....

How about 15 per hour plus partial benefits.....that's a start. No American should do that job for any less.

How about if the only skill set you have is picking fruit you figure out the problem is with you and why such a job isn't worth $15/hour.

No employer should be required to pay a job requiring skills worth $2/hour to pay $7.25/hour.
