By putting a name on the political propaganda the American public has been subjected to over the past 50 years, President Trump has empowered millions of Americans to express their justifiable scepticism over "news" reports that constantly prove to be misleading and/or false.

As a result, the MSM is in its death throes. Good riddance to the purveyors of Fake News.

The problem is, many of these people who are Trump supporters use "fake news" to avoid anything that is inconvenient.

If there's news which isn't real, but which is convenient, they'll believe it in an instant.

So the reality is he hasn't made people think about the sources of the news, think about whether it's good, something I learned in History class when I was a teenager, but instead he's given people the ammo to ignore the truth in place of some fantasy they want to believe.

But then seeing as most Americans are brought up to "believe" and accept nonsense through religion, it's hardly surprising it's been a big hit.

Trump puts out more fake news than the media

To be fair, the first politician I heard use the term 'fake news' in the last election was Hillary.

The MSM survived attacks from Nixon and Agnew, Palin, and will survive the clown show Trump puts on now. Likewise alternative news will always have its place.

Actually, I credit the Wasilla Chihuahua turned Momma Gerbil (Palin) with the beginning of the fake news movement. She's the one that started out with the "lamestream media".

Trump just saw how they were using the rhetoric and channeled it masterfully.

Nonsense.

Rightwing media have been contriving and propagating fake news long before Trump.

Fox ‘news’ was created solely for that purpose: to spread conservative lies, spin, and misinformation.

It's not just the moniker he applied to their business model, it's the evolution of communication. News Print has been getting hammered since the internet. Thanks to the internet, information can be found on infinite numbers of sites and applications, so controlling the narrative, remaining consistent even if one is pushing propaganda, is simply impossible.

Take it a step further with Trump reaching out directly to social media and it's extremely powerful. Right from the start CNN and MSNBC were discouraging him from doing this when ht became president, whenever they are against something, that's the sign that it's a great benefit to the president. He cuts through their filter, he can speak with authority and controversially if needed and no editor can alter it. Extremely powerful.

In the end, all the variety of sources of information will do the most harm to traditional news. Especially if the nation moves further right, they will only have Fox News. I believe there should be more competition for this base, it's why Fox is destroying everyone in the ratings for years now.

When you take all these facts, and the expose of the last election and the double standards some exercised, well, it's clear traditional news has lost it's lengthy advantage. It will still have a prime location on the tv dial, but it has been met with a crtitical eye for some time now. I think the internet was the largest contributor to this, and they didn't do themselves any favours, especially during and after the 2016 election. That has been the gift that keeps on giving for people pursuing alternative sources of information.

How can being a lying lunatic be an accomplishment?
