Facts that Should End Some Political Debate.

More evidence that Govt will be YEARS behind in helping to support this burgeoning economy...

North Dakota Oil Boom Brings Blight With Growth as Costs Soar - Bloomberg

The gravel road that borders Dave Hynek’s North Dakota farm is designed to carry 10 tractor- trailer trucks a day. In a recent 24-hour period, about 800 passed by.

Some are traveling 90 minutes west to Williston, where schools Superintendent Viola LaFontaine expects as many as 3,800 students this fall, about 57 percent more than her primary schools were built to hold.

“It’s absolutely destroying our infrastructure,” said Hynek, a Mountrail County commissioner, as he sat in a pickup truck on the 1,400-acre farm where his family has grown wheat, flax and sunflowers for four generations.

Hynek and other commissioners in the state’s largest oil producing county expect service needs to continue exploding as more workers flood the area.

“We have 800 wells -- they tell me there’s going to be 6,000 more in five years,” Hynek said. “It scares the hell out of me. They say you’d better get prepared for 50,000 more people.”

Higher tax receipts fostered by oil-industry revenue are helping finance a new water pipeline, rehabilitation of the state penitentiary and renovation of the state’s heritage center -- even as calls for more housing and funding for school construction go unheeded.

The state’s three-year-old boom, which attracted thousands of workers to 17 western counties, is progressing so quickly that studies commissioned to determine infrastructure needs are outdated the moment they leave the printer.

Five hotels are being built in Williston -- home to 14,500 people in 2010 and about 20,000 today -- and officials expect 1,200 apartments and single-family homes to be completed by summer. With 4,000 job openings, even that won’t be enough.

The North Dakota Legislature set aside $1.2 billion last spring to help counties cope with the oil boom’s impacts. About $885.3 million remains to be distributed.

Demand for aid is high. The state received 167 applications last fall for $50 million in road improvement grants alone, said Gerry Fisher, assistant director of the state’s energy infrastructure and impact office.

Oil companies say they’re doing their part to help western North Dakota cope. Houston-based Marathon gave $1 million in Dickenson, Continental donated $500,000 in Crosby, and New York- based Hess Corp. (HES) contributed $25 million to the state for public education, said Ron Ness, president of the Bismarck-based North Dakota Petroleum Council.

Imagine that --- $25MILL for public education infrastructure. Millions more that they weren't REQUIRED to contribute to HELP GOVT cope with the success.
Those damn greedy oil companies. Couldn't they wait for the govt to claim credit for the economic miracle???????

Was it the GENEROUSITY of those evil oil companies that chased off all the Obama defenders?

Or the fact that one state has lowered it's unemployment rate to 3% DESPITE all that govt effort to screw up their success??

The current debate about the contribution of Government to job creation and business success spurred on by Obama's recent remarks about "who built that" - has an existing real world experiment to check the assertions that have been made. This experiment also vividly demonstrates that "Service Jobs" are a RESPONSE to creation of NEW goods, products and concepts. Neither INFRASTRUCTURE or Service Jobs is a PRE-REQUISITE for growing an economy..

Where's the experiment? North Dakota..

Oil boom severely straining North Dakota economy | Minnesota Public Radio News

Moorhead, Minn. — A record amount of oil is flowing out of
western North Dakota, and unprecedented money is flowing into
the state.

The state starts the new year with a budget surplus of $800
million and growing. Income per person in North Dakota is now
above the U.S. average for the first time since the 1970s.
He said oil towns like Williston are growing beyond anyone's
expectations.

"We could talk about triple-digit growth in retail sales in some
quarters," Flynn said. "It's incredible the level of growth that
they have been seeing in the last couple of years. I don't think
anybody would have necessarily predicted it."

How did this happen WITHOUT ALL THOSE CONTRIBUTIONS the Prez was raving about? In fact -- it happened CONTRARY to everything he's tried to do with pipelines, and fossil fuels and pushing the greenest of econaut agendas.

I drew this example for the OP section because of course Public Radio just HAS to piss over this extraordinary economic boom with their own observations about the "STRAIN" it puts on govt (like an $800mill surplus -- :D) and the service sector.

Flynn said that rapid growth has the thrown the economy out of
equilibrium. He said high demand combined with a serious
shortage of workers is putting a lot of pressure on businesses.
"McDonald's is paying $10, $12, $15 an hour. Mall food courts
can't open until 3 or 4 o'clock in the afternoon when high
school students get out of class," he said. "You're seeing a
real issue with labor supply in western North Dakota."

The state allocated nearly $1 billion for infrastructure, like
roads damaged by heavy energy-related truck traffic. Counties
struggle to find enough workers to build or repair roads because
they can't compete with the paychecks workers earn in the oil
field.

Hey Public Radio --- It's A PROBLEM that McDonald's is paying $10/hour??

It's a PROBLEM that youth are FULLY EMPLOYED?
Leftists are silly aren't they?

It will be YEARS before govt gets it's pants on in North Dakota to catch up with reality.. We all know that. So why debate it anymore?

If we didn't have a public highway systems we wouldn't need North Dakota's oil, because no one would drive.

What award are you competing for?

Yeah -- that's probably obvious. But we might have those cool Jetson Aero-cars instead.

Ya know -- we didn't NEED a railroad to California UNTIL there was BUSINESS opportunities on the West Coast.. The potential for Mining, Forestry, Agriculture, etc had to be DEMONSTRATED (like a gold mine) before ANYONE wanted or needed rail service.

Wasn't gonna build a Nat. Hiway System just so you could visit Uncle Fred were we? Actually -- it really was for moving troops and tanks.. Kinda like that HUGE TSA infrastructure we're building in to protect us from the occasional crazy A-Rab..

This story is amazing and to think we could booming economies elsewhere if we could just be drilling. Drill, baby drill!

ALL Pure Pubcrappe, dupes.

"This great American system, AND these roads and bridges- you didn't do that." is what he said, MORONS.

An oil line bridge, well it's not for public use.
Need some help moving the goalposts?

And the bridge would be for traffic, too. You can tell because it said "Conoco Phillips wants to build a road bridge and pipeline over the river..."

As all thing that oilies built it is for their use only.
Look at Michigan. The oilies from Cnanda need a new bridge to haul all that crude into the US. Well the canadians and the state of michigan agrreed to build a bridge.
the Canadians are going to loan michigan the money and they will repay it through tolls on the new bridge.
Where is the oilies not getting help from the government?

I have no problem with govt and business working together to increase efficeincy. I love it. It is great. It allows all the taxpayers to use the new bridge also.

There are roads all over East Texas that everyone drives on that wouldn't be there if the oil companies and loggers hadn't built them.

People like you are so full of shit.....so which power source do you want? Oil, Coal, Hydro, or Nuclear?

Parts of North Dakota have become boom towns. What is the history for people and places with this boom town phenomena? The environment before government regulation catches up?

We all know the tales of wealth and riches .. the streets of America are paved with gold.

reality check

Now we're back to the anti-growth, sustainability crap that leftists USED to moan about before our economy got humbled.

Can't have McDonald's paying $10/hour.. That's not sustainable!!

Who CARES in a recession eh? Do you STILL have your shovel ready job from the BOOM that govt created?

What you're REALLY pissed about is that you are not DRIVING this economic boom. That Govt is going to be WELL BEHIND the power curve to COMMAND it and CONTROL it.

Therefore --- it's all bad.

Point is --- lack of infrastructure, lack of Service jobs, lack of Govt "help", NEVER stops true entreprenuership or innovation.. If I was you -- I WOULD be pissed to lose that argument.

The Railroads had to be built before the West got innovated.

get a life

The railroads were built from the west and the east. There were people in California before anyone ever heard of a railroad, they either walked, or took a boat.

DING DING!!!!!!!!! He's never heard of the Donner Party, see the Donner clan was going to California to where OTHER PEOPLE were..... And that was before the railroad.....thanks for knowing some history there Dante!

If we didn't have a public highway systems we wouldn't need North Dakota's oil, because no one would drive.

Hundreds of thousands were driving automobiles before we ever had a public highway system. They drove on dirt roads that were created by wagons, and in many cases, not much more than a cow path.

In response to another ignorant post, oil companies built the Alaskan pipe line, including the only highway bridge across the Yukon river.

Private ships carried the people and supplies to California, Oregon, Washington and Alaska before government built anything more than a shack to house its limited functions.

People and business can prosper without government, but government cannot prosper without people and businesses.

Keynesian economics is gay............about to get mothballed for at least 2 generations. Never worked in the history of the world and has never worked as a platform for securing votes. ( except from the k00k left).

This is still America.

To cleanse any stain of wickedness you may have gotten from these dangerous and perilous ideas, say ten Our Governments and ten Hail Obamas.

Amen.

Apparently -- most of them do a great job of shunning any threads that display facts and examples of how jobs and economic growth happen in the real world. And WHO builds an economy out of a recession.. No recession in North Dakota for the next 50 years...

Like that big red button in the Staples commercial -----

""THAT was easy"" !!
