The reason the Republicans (or more acuratly the Tea Party folks, the Republicans are just making hay while the sun shine on this) are getting so much traction right now is because of stupid games like this. People don't like stunts to deny them their voices.
And it looks like the anger is getting cumulative, rather than dying down.
By letter and by every imaginable manner people are yelling about what they want, and the powers in Washington are ignoring them. In November they were angry at Bush but now the target has shifted.
All that has to happen is for the folks in Washington to pay attention to the voters. They refuse.
Maybe the election of Brown will be a wake up. And maybe not. But if they play stupid with this, the anger will only get stronger.

That's not so. On the issues, America is a center-left nation. We like big government and big government solutions. The problem is, this solution is not big enough. It leaves too much to private interests. We're disappointed and we're abandoning Obama because he's listening to Republicans. Should Brown win, it won't be because Americans have changed their minds, it will be because progressives have.

This is why it's so hard to guesstimate Dem losses in November. At a bare minimum it's 40 seats, if Brown wins and he's not appointed so ObamaCare passes its probably into triple digits, especially since Palin now has a national news platform.
