Tonight's segment on the Israelis treatment of Palestinians was a reminder of why the US needs to ween Israel from our list of countries that receive economic aid. Israel has too many zealots living there that don't care about human rights.

One woman said that she would even fight her own government's meager attempts to make things better for the Palestinians. Also, young jews were acting in defiance of the government as well, while older Jews enter the military in order to be able to squash government intervention to the building of illegal homes in the West Bank by Jewish settlers. The number of Israelis who don't care for a two state approach to peace is growing amongst the Jewish population of settlers/homesteaders.

And here again I argue that it is not for the United States to sponsor a religious operation such as that which is going on in Israel. Separation of church and state.

The 60 Minutes report was wildly inaccurate. While the report interviewed only Israelis opposed to a two state solution, giving the false impression that most Israelis oppose it, a recent poll showed that 55% of Israelis supported a negotiated final settlement with the Palestinians and only 16% opposed. For some reason 60 Minutes chose to only interview Israelis from this 16%.

What 60 Minutes decided not to report is that the recognized settlements take up only about 6% of the West Bank and in negotiations Israel has offered to give the Palestinians land from pre 1967 Israel in exchange for the land the settlements are on. While the settlers are hardcore, they make up only about 5% of Israel's population and when Israel gave up the Sinai to make peace with Egypt, settlers that were just as hardcore were removed by force by the IDF and when Israel decided to withdraw from Gaza the settlers there were removed by force by the IDF also. 60 Minutes gave an entirely false impression by suggesting that the IDF wouldn't or couldn't remove settlers from the West Bank as a part of a final peace agreement with the Palestinians.

Again, what 60 Minutes chose not to report is that Nablus, where the Israeli soldiers used a house for surveillance, has long been a main base of operations for Palestinian terrorists and before the IDF and Shin Bet put it under tight occupation in response to the second intifada, dozens of terrorist attacks, mostly unsuccessful, were launched from Nablus every week. Similarly, before the checkpoints were established, terrorists were able to move unobserved until they were practically in Israel. 60 Minutes should have pointed out that there is a new cooperation between the Palestinian Authority security services, now being trained by US and Jordanian advisers, that has allowed the IDF to pull back from some areas as the PA security forces have shown themselves able and willing to stop terrorist attacks.

In Jerusalem, the Israeli government has put strict limits on new housing except in certain areas to prevent both Jews and Palestinians from trying to flood the city in efforts to bias a final settlement in either direction. Both Arab and Jewish houses that were built without permits have been torn down.

Here's a poll of Israeli opinion that shows how woefully inaccurate the 60 Minutes report was.

Poll: 55% of Israelis want deal with PA | Israel | Jerusalem Post

Did you? During the recent operation in Gaza the US Senate unanimously passed a resolution supporting Israel and all but five members of the House passed voted for a similar resolution.

"During the recent operation in Gaza..."

This whole argument is off base because the support for Israel is not religious in origin, nor is the disapproval of the Palestinians.

    This is my 1000th post.

Yeah try telling that to the Christian zealots in this country who say Israel is "Gods chosen people" They and their televangelist preachers are insane. This country should stop all aid to this terrorist genocidal country and concentrate on the needs here at home, they have too much influence over our lawmakers with their bribes conducted through AIPAC. Israel has ignored 68 UN resolutions and the US sits back and does nothing about their atrocities and continues to fund them to the tune of like 3 billion a year. It's time to elect some leaders who wont kiss Israeli ass and call a spade a spade, I for one am sick of the hypocrisy.
