Rockets fired from Lebanon hit northern Israel - Haaretz - Israel News

Report: Rockets hit Northern Israel

By Jack Khoury, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service

At least three Katyusha rockets, fired from south Lebanon, landed in northern Israel early Thursday morning.

A medical official said several people were lightly wounded. Channel 10 reported that five people were lightly wounded or suffered shock.
The rockets marked the first time Katyushas have landed in Israel
since Israel began its offensive against Palestinian militants in the
Gaza Strip on December 27. Residents of the western Galilee on Wednesday reported that three rockets hit their communities, with one falling near Nahariya. Channel 1 reported that several northern residents have opened their bomb shelters. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah on Wednesday warned that should Israel attack Lebanon, it would suffer an even greater defeat than the one he claimed it suffered in 2006. "We are prepared for every possibility and are ready for all aggression... The Zionists will discover that the war they had in July was a walk in the park if we compare it to what we've prepared for every new aggression," Nasrallah said, referring to the Second Lebanon War.

Update:

Israel has returned fire and has hit targets in Northern Lebanon. This is getting bad very quickly.

The Jerusalem Post article says it is unclear whether the rockets were fired by Hezbollah or Palestinians in Lebanon. The Israeli response should be measured for now and Israel should demand that UNIFIL take effective measures against those who fired the rockets and that any cease fire agreement with Hamas should contain permanent measures to insure there will be no more rockets from Lebanon since these two events are clearly connected and if an international force in Lebanon is unable to prevent rocket fire from there, there is no reason to believe an international force in Gaza will be effective.

Security sources: Palestinian group responsible for fire on north

Defense establishment sources estimated Thursday that the Katyusha fire on northern Israel was carried out by a Palestinian group in Lebanon and not by Hizbullah. The assessment was based on the type and number of rockets fire.

Earlier, Lebanese security forces confirmed that three to five Katyusha rockets were fired at the western Galilee. (Sharon Roffe-Ofir, Reuters)

Huh, the article said it was "FALSE ALARM". Some unidentified people shot rockets from Lebanon into Israel, Hezbollah claims that is was not involved. Why would Hezbollah say that if it was involved? They don't have any gain by it, do they? If they were the Israeli/Lebanese/... intelligence will find out about it anyway. Israeli forces have used artillery to fire (a limited amount of ammunition was used) at the spot where the rockets were coming from, they didn't really attack in force (at least that is what is written in the article).

It s probably some extremist organization that wants to push Hezbollah into a fight with Israel.

Can you give an update, if it is indeed Hezbollah that is now in active combat with Israel?

All the articles I've seen seem to agree the rockets were not fired by Hezbollah but by Palestinian groups in Lebanon. Iran recently stated that Hezbollah would not get involved in the conflict and today Iran announced it would not allow its citizens to leave the country to attack Israel, despite its recent boast that it had 70,000 suicide bomber wannabes eager to go. Iran's supreme leader stated today that Iranians should limit their actions in support of Hamas to mental and political jihad, presumably meaning they should say and think bad things about Israel. It appears the rest of the Arabs and Muslims want no more involvement in the conflict than that.
