English Made Official.........Imagine that?

The larger issue here that has yet to be addressed is, this country is being deluted from within.

There are those who wish to see America falter, and one of those countries lies on our borders. The second largest spoken language in this country is spanish, and if the Mexicans have their way, they'll have the English speaking Americans learn spanish before they'll learn English.

America is slowly but surely LOSING it's identity. The people that fought, spilled their blood and died to make this place America are being replaced with people that couldn't care less what the fuck America is or was or who made it this way. They want it like where the fuck they came from. That's the whole damn issue here. Do we have millions of foriegners coming here, and wind up with more people speaking foriegn languages than English, or do we make English the official American language?

Well, I say make English the official language. That's what the people that fought, bled and died creating this country spoke, so learn it, or get the fuck out.

You don't like that, then fuck you too.

I see your sentiment pale. But im all for government staying the fuck out of our lives. Having them enforce a National language is them forcing us to act a certain way. Just like them forcing us to have bilingual signs in certain areas to accomadate people is a violation of my rights.

The government needs to get out of the business of telling people what to do and get back to doing what the people tell them. Until "we the people" can figure that out, we're doomed.

I already knew your family was made of better immigrants than ones you want to persecute - this was an obvious argument for you to make. And let us not forget the past is always better than the present - that is why you are a conservative, to keep things the same, to make laws to enforce the status quo..

If the immigrants of today are just as good as the immigrants of yesteryear then why should the immigrants of today get any special favors today when those of yesteryear didn't? I suppose you think that not providing an interpreter is a form of "persecution"?

You should move back to Europe where they seem to love racism and culture by force. You said there is no shame in that, right? Maybe you can help the new German National Socialist party get some more parliamentary seats. Or help Jean-Marie LePen get elected in France. I forgot - you could help the English keep Northern Ireland..

Since the new European Union is composed of all sorts of nationalities with different languages, I suppose that you also support a multi-lingual E.U.?? That should be fun and so very effective ...just like the UN.

Again, are you going to make other languages illegal? Only that will stop the Chinese from speaking Mandarin and the Latin Americans from speaking Spanish and Portuguese..

Other languages should be made illegal for general use in U.S. English speaking government agencies and applications. Other languages should not be forced upon private business.

By the way, where are all of these non-English speakers who are taking over your America and corrupt its culture.

Just take a look at the Chicano problem in the Southwest.

"Today, there are reasons to believe that Chicanos as a group are unlike previous immigrants in that they are more likely to remain unassimilated and unintegrated, whether by choice or circumstance - resulting in the formation of a separate quasi-nation within the United States.

More than that, there are Chicano political activists who intend to marry cultural separateness with territorial and political self-determination. The more moderate among them aspire to the cultural and political autonomy of "home rule". The radicals seek nothing less than secession from the United States whether to form their own sovereign state or to reunify with Mexico. Those who desire reunification with Mexico are irredentists who seek to reclaim Mexico's "lost" territories in the American Southwest.4 Whatever their goals, what animates all of them is the dream of Aztlan."

"Brent A. Nelson, writing in 1994, observed that in the 1980s America's Southwest had begun to be transformed into "a de facto nation" with its own culture, history, myth, geography, religion, education, and language. Whatever evidence there is indicates that Chicanos, as a group, are unlike previous waves of immigrants into the United States. "

Tried to "point" you, Screaming Eagle. No can do just yet. Helluva post, though. You've gone straight to the heart of the matter.

It is unenforcable. Do you want it to be illegal to speak other languages in the US? Are you going to take down street signs in New York that are currently in Mandarin? Are you going take Univision off the air? Will Indian movies be banned from import?

I just think this newly proposed law (proposed as an amendment since 1981, I think) is a sad attempt at forcibly creating American culture. The next step will be dividing the US into English speakers and non-English speakers. Officially excluding people who do not speak 'official US English' from the 'educated speakers'.

Not correct. A declaration that english is the official language of the United States does not prohibit anyone from speaking other languages nor does it impose on anyone the "American culture" you seem to fear.

All this would really do is relieve the government of the responsibility of providing public services in any language except english. If a person goes to the local food stamp office and cannot speak english, he would have to bring his own interpreter. He cannot sue the government for failure to provide services in his native language. If a person wants a driver's license, he can't take the exam in Chinese.

Here's a concept for you - and I can speak with authority on this since I'm a first generation immigrant from Germany - if a person comes to this country, it should be with the intention of becoming an American. People should not be immigrating to the USA to be a German in the United States, or Chinese, Spanish, French (especially French) etc etc. If you come here, you should be willing and fully prepared to adopt the ways and the language of your new home. If you're not willing to do that - then stay the hell wherever you are and be happy. Want to be a German? That's why God invented Germany. Gesundheit!

I don't quite see it this way insein. I think that if English was made the official spoken language of America, like Merlin1047 pointed out above, it RELIEVES the government of all it's obligation to accomidate all these other languages.

If you don't speak English, you don't get a drivers license, you don't go to school, you don't become an American citizen, and you don't pass go and collect $200. You're S.O.L., as it should be.

I agree 100%.

Excellent point, Merlin. To draw what may seem a bit of a silly analogy, it is illegal in most big cities to wear high heels on the street. Does that mean the cops go around writing tickets? No - but if a woman (or, whatever, in this day and age) steps in a sewer grate and breaks her ankle, she can't sue the city, since she was breaking the law. It works a little hard for the rhyme, I'll admit, but it's the same principle.
