McCain: Obama fundraising hurts public financing
By GLEN JOHNSON, Associated Press Writer Glen Johnson, Associated Press Writer 2 hrs 39 mins ago

COLUMBUS, Ohio – The vast sums of money Barack Obama is raising for the presidential campaign risk the post-Watergate financing reforms, Republican rival John McCain charged Sunday.

Speaking a few hours after Obama's campaign reported raising a record $150 million in September, McCain said the overall sum the Democrat has raised for his campaign — $605 million — showed the "dam has broken" for future White House races.

He also complained that the identities of people who contributed more than $200 million of Obama's total take have not been reported, although that is allowable under federal law because the individual donations fall under the $200 reporting limit.

"I'm saying it's laying a predicate for the future that can be very dangerous," McCain said on "Fox News Sunday." "History shows us where unlimited amounts of money are in political campaigns, it leads to scandal."

The Arizona senator has been limited to spending $84 million for the general election campaign after accepting federal funds under a program created after the Watergate scandal. Obama initially indicated he would adhere to the same limit, but reversed course and became the first post-Watergate candidate to finance a general-election campaign with private funding....

They have no problem voting for an initiative that would send trillions of taxpayers money into Wall Street. Imagine if they gave those trillions and spread it to the American people. We would have benefited this economy much more than the $300 billion (or whatever # it is) they propose in the stimulus package.

Nope, the stimulus package did zip, as will the second if Obama is elected. Money seeks its own level. (I'm certain you've heard that if all the money were distributed fairly, in a certain amount of time, it would make its way back to those that are currently 'rich'.)

This sounds like whining from a man who is used to being in the party that has the most money.

funny how when something doesnt work well for republicans they want to stop it....

obama turned down public funding.....mccain could have done the same.

especially since he knew that Obama was turning it down in advance. He could've easily opted out as well.

I think Obama would still be kickin his ass in fundraising though.

Turning down public funding is just another example of Obama being smarter than McCain.

Obama is running a great campaign.

I agree. The whole idea of regulating campaigns was stupid.

That is the ticket... when the corporations out donated the people the republicans cheered. Suddenly the people are engaged in politics and the republicans are crying "foul".

Can y'all think of any ways to reform our politics?
