Yes, I know. Who cares what happens in Belgium? Well, Socialism has suffered another defeat and even intensely Leftist Belgium is moving to the Right. This follows similar election moves in Canada, Germany, and France. Spanish Socialist PM Zippo’s (Zaperto) days may be numbered. Even in Europe people are beginning to realize that too much government is counterproductive. EU voting trends do not necessarily indicate similar patterns elsewhere. But those that think the electorates in places such as Britain, Australia, Japan, and America are moving to the Left may be in for a shock.

BRUSSELS, Belgium (AP) -- Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt conceded defeat Sunday on behalf of his coalition of Liberals and Socialists in general elections that saw the Christian Democrats translating eight years in opposition into major gains.

"The voters of our country today elected a new government and the results of these elections are clear: the voter opted for a different majority," Verhofstadt said.

He is expected to offer King Albert II the resignation of his government on Monday.

Guy Leterme -- head of the Dutch-speaking Christian Democrats and possibly Belgium's next premier -- told a gathering of the party faithful as the votes were still being counted, "It is time for change. People want a different course."

It's eerie how these elections keep going, yet the libs here keep speaking of how we need to get more 'European.'

Well I think we should then. Let's move to the right!

I think its interesting and im very curious what brought this sweeping change through Europe.

You guys are aware that in Europe the right is still left of center ( well except the FAR right, those guys are scary)?

It isn't that easy anymore. Left parties here have done stuff that would make your right envy.

When our L party was in charge they made government institutions private. Now the R-party (In power) is picking up the speed. But just instigate such a move from a L-perspective would have been impossible just 30 years ago.

I think Europe is moving right on the whole - main reason is economy.

But in single issues the R/L marker can't be compared between nations. It works mainly with economical patterns.

(A laymans observation)

The R/L in France are different than in US or UK. The right is not really for the conservatives,; it's more for the liberal (economical). In USA, I believe that everybody is capitalist and liberal, the separation is about the consevrative/progressist point of view.
