Elderly Man Barred from Selling Homemade Fruitcakes

No wonder I don't like Bill Richardson. But, at least now, he's going to be outta there for the next 4 years.

I do like NM though.....one of the nicer places to ride through on a scooter. One thing that I always thought was odd about the place though....it seems as soon as you cross the state line, the sky gets brighter with deeper colors somehow.

Yes, were are happy to see Mr. let me mug for the media attention go! What a creep he is.

I always thought it was funny that as soon as you crossed NM state lines (leaving not coming) you were in pretty green area's, not dirty brown desert type area's.

We do have lots of blue sky and gorgeous sunsets though.

Listen....if he's only selling around the neighborhood, they should leave him alone. Matter of fact, there is a friend of mine named Cody over here in Amarillo. Every Sunday, from 10 until around 1 or 2, he serves breakfast at this little spot he's built out back. There is no permits, he's outside of the city limits, and they can't screw with him, although they've tried. Breakfast is 5 bucks by the way....all you can eat. He makes enough money that way so he doesn't really have to hold down a job.

If you're gonna have a beef about that, then I stand by calling you a bitch. Why? Because the old man isn't harming anyone. Matter of fact, he's bringing in quite a bit of good karma to others and making a buck or two at the same time.

I already said that my perspective comes from an urban view of unlicensed vendors selling food that can get people sick.

We're talking allegedly about 144 to 168 pies. It's not that I don't think the guy should make money, but I'm also guessing that something happened to make them come down on him. They didn't just drive up to his house one day and try to shut him down.

We also don't know even half the story here...not from a paragraph written by some poster calling themself "Intelligence" on a blog...

Your response to me was uncalled for in any event. I've never said a rude word to you.... agree or disagree.

Exactly. So why go after a dude who has sold fruitcake for several years, and NOBODY got sick?

They should only go after the ones that put people in the hospital IMHO, at least as far as food vendors go.

And.....being a licensed food place ain't necessarily the best either. IHOP here in Amarillo (and right next to I-40) ended up with TWO bad cases of salmonella in less than 6 months.

Nobody died, but lots of people got sick.

It used to be that the philosophy of government was "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." But, I think that has changed, and government taking a more active role in small sellers like this is not a change that most of us welcome.

Licensed or unlicensed, it really don't matter which, because if the food gets people sick, report the bastards and get them to clean up their act, or go home.

Matter of fact, I was hired on as a cook for a bar here in Amarillo called Jaguars (yeah....it was a titty bar). They needed a cook, because the old one was a soup sandwich, and ended up fired.

Walked into the kitchen and almost left. The place was a disgusting mess. Took me 24 hours of solid cleaning before I felt right about cooking in the place.

They were licensed.

The burrito vendors I told you about? Unlicensed, and, never heard of ANYONE getting sick from the people that I bought them from. And.....their stuff (the coolers and such) were CLEANER than most good restaraunts that I've been to.

What was the "something" that made them come down on him? Probably someone who was pissed that the people were buying his fruitcakes instead of their stuff, or, just someone that enjoys ratting people out. Very possible actually. Matter of fact, I wouldn't be the slightest bit surprised if that is what happened.

As far as saying that you didn't deserve my comments and apologizing? Shit dear, you offended me when you took such an idiotic position, and so therefore, you deserved what you got.

Want sympathy from me? Check Webster's dictionary.....it's somewhere between "shit" and "syphillis".

Looking for pity? Same deal, only it's between piss and porno.

One of my favorite places to eat in Pittsburgh is in the kitchen/restaurant of a Caribbean lady who serves lunch (curried goat, curried fish, curried chicken, etc.) in Homewood. Delicious, plentiful food. If she EVER served bad food to her customers, her word of mouth business would end in a split second.

There is a difference between transient food vendors with no accountability and people who have a small, word-of-mouth business that relies on local customers. Those places police themselves...they have to.

Tell that to the owners of the taco stand in Tijuana where I got food poisoning during my honeymoon.

Not transient. Good food. VERY VERY VERY SICK.

You aren't local to tijuana. They have bacteria that your colon hasn't become accustomed to, darlin. You eat at a taco stand in Tijuana, you deserve what you get for stupidity.

There is a huge difference between eating local in Tijuana, and eating local in Pittsburgh.

Yep. The health standards here in the US are a hell of a lot stricter than what is over in Mexico.

They've grown accustomed to the bugs, and don't really mind them, as there is a kind of parasitic symbiosis going on.

We, on the other hand, don't have their antibodies, and so, our first couple of times out of the gate, we end up sick.

Found that out from traveling all over the world. Had lots of friends who were doctors that taught me a bit of things.

Allie.....you were an idiot.

Yes, I know. THe raw sewage running past the booths was a dead give-away.

The point being, we need a certain level of accountability and oversight of our food supply. You can make and give away whatever you want, there's an understanding that people who receive food for free are taking their chances. But when you sell food in the US you are accountable...

So it doesn't shock or disturb me that the guy can't sell his goodies without a license and without meeting certain guidelines. That's why we don't have rampant parasitical infestations of our population....

Ummm......did you read what I'd posted about IHOP here in Amarillo?

Licensing doesn't necessarily protect ya.

No, but it does help. We have isolated cases of food poisoning, but not the rampant infestation of parasites that countries without stringent guidelines have.

Thanks, I don't want to develop a "resistance" to weird gut bugs.

You may wish to re-think that position dear.

One of the reasons that there are so many different varieties of bugs, is because they become superbugs when people don't take all their medicine, and, when they develop that far, it's just a short hop over to epidemic.

Being too clean has it's drawbacks. Howard Hughes was a good example.

I honestly don't think we're "too clean" in the US. Having seen how grain and meat and various foods are grown and processed, I think we're exposed to plenty of crap every day.

It's just well cooked crap...which is how you kill most of it.

The bugs you're talking about are primarily viral...though there are also bacterium and prions...and that's a different subject than the cleanliness of food. There are no superbugs because our FOOD is too clean. There are superbugs for a couple of reasons...one is that they just adapt quickly, and the other is that people are stupid about their antibiotics...and also those antibiotics have wound up in our water systems.

But as I said...that's a separate issue from clean food.

Food can't be too clean, and there are no drawbacks to it.

Do you know why most doctors recommend that the mothers breastfeed their kids?

So that they can get their antibodies built up quicker. Formula from a can is too sterile to do that.

And......trust me.......several doctors over the years have told me that the primary cause of superbugs is that people quit taking medicine as soon as they feel better, but before they are supposed to stop.

Matter of fact, that's where the flesh eating stuff came from.

That's not what we're talking about here. Nobody is advocating for the elimination of bacteria from all food.

Simple oversight and moderate standards.

No, I'm not. I don't associate "bacteria" necessarily with filth, I guess. I just believe food should be clean. Not STERILE, as I've already said. At least once and more than once, I believe.

The point is, you're arguing different things. Superbugs aren't caused because we require food to be inspected. And when I say it can't be too clean, I'm not implying that we have to get rid of things like yeast and cheese.

Hold the phone........based on the traditions that this country has developed over the past little while, it IS permissible to sell liberals.

But only during Christmas..........

After January 1st, pack 'em back up in their tins, and tell them to wait until next December 1st.
