Egypt to buy Turkish Anka UAVs

Egypt intends to buy 10 Turkish indigenously built Anka unmanned aerial vehicles.

The contract follows negotiations that lasted 2 1/2 months. The decision was made during a visit by Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to Cairo last week, when Turkey and Egypt signed a number of cooperation agreements, including a related to defense industry cooperation.

Turkish State Aerospace Industries Company Director General Muharrem Dortkasli said many countries neighboring Turkey are interested possibly acquiring Anka UAVs as well.

It is not clear as of now if Egypt will buy armed-version of the UAV.

Israeli sources say the proposed new deal is intended to project the close ties between Turkey and the new regime in Egypt, and not just to meet the latter's operational needs.

Cairo is also reportedly trying to acquire General Atomics Aeronautical Systems Predator UAVs from the USA, but Washington has been hesitant to approve such a deal until the situation in post-Arab Spring Egypt becomes clearer.

those things are only as valuable as the enemy's air force is incapable of shooting them down - lots of luck against Israel ... especially if they are armed.

Egypt will be able to challenge Israel's dominance in the region by the end of the next decade.

Turkey is currently on course to reach military parity with Israel even sooner.
