The global sea level will only rise about 10 feet if the West Antarctic ice sheet collapses.
While that may not sound so great to residents of coastal cities like New York or Los Angeles, it's only about half the previously predicted rise.

If the West Antarctic ice sheet collapses, the global sea level will rise about 10 feet, researchers said in the May 15 edition of the journal Science. That's about half the rise that was previously predicted. Scientists say most of the increase would occur along the East and West Coasts of the U.S. Here, ice melts near Biscoe Island in Antarctica.

Researchers led by Jonathan L. Bamber of the University of Bristol in Britain report their recalculation of the hazard in Friday's edition of the journal Science. However, they add, the maximum increase is expected along the East and West Coasts of the United States, where the water could rise as much as 25 percent more than in other regions.
The West Antarctic Ice Sheet can be unstable and has long concerned researchers who fear it could collapse as a result of global warming.
Previous studies had estimated that failure of the ice sheet, causing it to slide into the ocean, would raise global seas levels by 5-to-6 meters, or 16-to-19 feet.

And this is the reason so many of us question the effects of global warming or if it is even caused by human activity. What will the next revision state? Maybe they will again revise this to a sea level rise of only three feet. Maybe they will say "oops, we were just a little off on our models".

Wouldn't the sea level rise everywhere equally, while a similar rise everywhere would encroach horizontally more on land areas closer to sea level?

Thje Holy Grail of all of the is stuff is that there is a consensus. There is no consensus on this particular part of it. Also, those who do endorse this stipulate that it will take hundreds of years for the ice shelf to melt if it does.

In order to promote the inclusion of this prediction of dire consequence, water must react to its containment as a solid instead of a liquid and therefore will flood New york and LA.

So: There is no consensus, it will take centuries for this to actually happen if it does and water must act like ice. Must truth be this inconvenient?

A little geography lesson about the “West Antarctic Ice Sheet” includes the fact that this formation “is classified as a marine-based ice sheet, meaning that its bed lies well below sea level and its edges flow into floating ice shelves.” (Wiki). Ice generally floats on top of the water, because water in a frozen state has a larger mass (from expansion) and becomes less dense than the surrounding water. Therefore, the ice from this ice sheet is actually displacing ‘more’ water than if the ‘underwater mass’ melted; which would lower the sea levels rather than raise them.

If the West Antarctic ice sheet collapses, the global sea level will rise about 10 feet, researchers said in the May 15 edition of the journal Science. That's about half the rise that was previously predicted. Scientists say most of the increase would occur along the East and West Coasts of the U.S. Here, ice melts near Biscoe Island in Antarctica.

But only temporarily. According to John Turner of the British Antarctic Survey, the effect will last roughly another decade before Antarctic sea ice starts to decline as well.

Arctic sea ice is decreasing dramatically and reached a record low in 2007. But satellite images studied by Turner and his colleagues show that Antarctic sea ice is increasing in every month of the year expect January. "By the end of the century we expect one third of Antarctic sea ice to disappear," says Turner. "So we're trying to understand why it's increasing now, at a time of global warming." (Continued)

These scientists appear to have their feet firmly planted in reality, because (like Wiki said) the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is ‘a marine-based ice sheet, meaning that its bed lies well below sea level’ and melting ice that is underwater in NO WAY raises sea levels. Suppose you fill a tall glass with ice and then fill the glass to the top with water. When all of the ice melts in the glass (most is underwater), then the level of water in the glass will actually decrease; because water displaces less volume than ice.

Then the idea that the east and west coasts of the USA would suffer rising sea levels, ‘more’ than the rest of the world, is more evidence that this ‘collapsing ice sheet’ nonsense is Global Warming Propaganda aimed at specific groups inside the USA itself. Even an idiot should realize that sea levels around the globe are affected by melting ice caps that must spread the water evenly around the world. Some New World Order Disinformation Lobby Group is trying to scare Americans into allowing ‘Cap And Trade’ taxation on carbon dioxide emissions, by creating the illusion of a crisis where NONE EXISTS.

I have heard that there are "piles" of ocean water that occur due to anomolies in the gavitational field of the planet. Do these happen to exist at the sites where our largest coastal populations reside? If they do, then the water must already be higher than elsewwhere.

If the water is currently at a level comparable to the rest of the world, what would cause it to pile up after the Ice Shelf melts in the year 2300?

Well, Code, were you to read the article, and further research the subject, you would see what the geophycists are basing their conclusions on.


Haviong read the article, it says that the water will move to the equator and to the norhtern Hemisphere. From this, their model says that it will get higher specifically around the East and West Coasts of the USA. This just seems to require a leap of faith after the initial caveat that there is is no Consensus for the melting in the first place and this is the one and only model to produce this new prediction of dire consequence.

While it does not have the backing of a consensus, it at least does make the prediction of dire consequence, so it is at least half correct to the proponents of AGW.
 
There is no consensus on what is happening nor how fast, because we simply do not have enough information on how ice sheets this vast react, or what the speed of reaction is. We do know that the breakup of the ice shelves that are already history took us by surprise. It would be nice if the coming surprises were of the other nature, moving slower than we expect. But that is not likely, given what we have already seen.
