Economic Inequality: The Greatest Conflict in US Society Today.

According to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center about two-thirds of Americans now believe there are "strong conflicts" between rich and poor in the US. That share represents a 50 percent increase from a 2009 survey in which 47% of those polled said there were strong conflicts between economic classes.

For the first time conflict between rich and poor eclipsed tensions over race and immigration in the survey which polled 2,048 adults between December 6 to December 19.

"Independents, whose votes will be fought over by both parties, showed the single largest increase in perceptions of conflicts between rich and poor, up 23 percentage points, to 68 percent, compared with an 18-point rise among Democrats and a 17-point rise for Republicans.

"Sixty-eight percent of independents believe there are strong class conflicts, just below the 73 percent of Democrats who do. (The survey’s margin of sampling error is plus or minus three percentage points for results based on the total sample.)

“'The story for me was the consistency of the change,'... 'Everyone sees more conflict.'”

Economic Inequality: The Greatest Conflict in US Society Today.

Since that's utter horseshit, I didn't bother to read the rest of it since it must be a parade of whining and crying, if not just more lies.

Occupy Wall Street completely changed the national conversation.

And now the Republicans are putting up a candidate who is a poster child for everything that is wrong with our tax system.

Thank you, Republicans!

Yup, it was pretty stupid of us...

Of course, I'm not seeing where Obama is really doing anything about the issue, other than carping about it.

The biggest source of economic inequality is that companies have found it economically advantageous to offshore jobs. So when that computer made in China you work on breaks down and you have to call tech support, you'll be talking to "Bobby" in India whose real name is Pradip and he's reading from a book because he doesn't speak English that well. ("Is the compoooter ploooged in?") The differential between what you would have paid an American to do that job and what you are paying "Bobby" goes into the rich guys pocket.

Now part of this is really our own fault. How many of us go through the store and check where what we are buying is made? How many of us will skip over the $2.00 item made in China and buy the $3.00 item made in America? We could fix a lot of this problem simply by changing our own spending habits.

The thing is, the politicians aren't going to fix this. BOTH parties strongly advocate free trade, even though it is at the root of nearly all of our problems. And when somone like Pat Buchanana or Ross Perot points out the silliness of it, they are immediately denounced.

"The survey’s main question — 'In America, how much conflict is there between poor people and rich people?'...

"Mr. Smith said the question was often understood to mean, 'Do the rich and the poor get along?' and 'Do they have the same objectives?'”

http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/12/us/more-conflict-seen-between-rich-and-poor-survey-finds.html?_r=1

What does your horse sense tell you about the main question?
Do the 1% and the 99% have the same objectives?
If not income inequality, what is the "Greatest Conflict" in the US today?

If your state has established third party candidates appearing on its ballots, it is possible to vote AGAINST Republicans AND Democrats. The same technology that made the Arab Spring and OWS movements possible could convince millions of US voters to FLUSH hundreds of DC incumbents from office in 2012.

Fire the second shot heard 'round the world without killing anyone.

How do you feel about a wall separating private wealth from government?

And yet the GOP thinks they can win the election by representing the 1% to the detriment of the 99%.

This post ends the thread. No more discussion is needed because it points out the problem, and the fact that nothing will be done about it so long as we keep playing revolving door politics with a two party system.

Not only does free trade hurt jobs, but it's also the source of some of those tax loopholes that Democrats hate so much. Ending free trade agreements could very well be the greatest boost to our economy in decades. But because the only people that support repealing them don't poll well against the opposition, I guess we're just fucked and we'll have to live them.

You don't have a bucket big enough.

"In December of 2011, Oakland’s official unemployment rate was a devastating 14.1%. As cities like Oakland are ground into the dust by austerity, every last public dollar will be fed to corrupt, militarized police departments in order to contain social unrest.

"On November 2 of last year, Occupy Oakland carried out the first General Strike in the US since the 1946 Oakland General Strike, shutting down the center of the city and blockading the Port of Oakland."

Americans dont even see these OWS assholes as anti-capitalist anymore............they see it as a pro-begging movement.

From your link:

"One of them burned a dollar, stomped on the American flag and raged against it.

"'This *---(flag?) represents more violence to me than any fascist symbol from Europe,' the masked protester said. 'For someone with enslaved African blood and indigenous blood, this *--- represents true evil for me.

"'My people were not exterminated in the European holocaust,' he added. 'They were exterminated in the U.S. holocaust.'"

Capitalism has a lot to answer for including genocide and chattel slavery in this country.

People wouldn't need payday loans if they simply lived within their means.
Agreed.

However, does the fact that people are conditioned to buy stuff they don't need from the time they're old enough to sit in front of a television justify tax payer supported banks funding usury?

Nope.
Banks that were too big to fail in 2008 are now too big to save.
They are also insolvent save for the Federal Reserve's near-zero interest rate on their loans.
When the next crash occurs, they will have their DC puppets shriek "martial law".
I know you didn't support the last bail-out, but I'm wondering if you'll be voting for any politicians who did next November?
