The NAFTA Corridors:
Offshoring U.S. Transportation Jobs to Mexico
Richard D. Vogel

Economic Costs:
Based on the estimated construction cost of $31.4 million per mile, the 4,000-mile Texas sections of the NAFTA corridors will cost $125.5 billion, not including right-of-way and miscellaneous costs. Adding in right-of-way costs of $11.7–$38 billion and miscellaneous costs of $8–$20 billion, the estimated total outlay for the NAFTA corridors in Texas ranges from $145.2 billion to $183.5 billion. Cost estimates for the entire NAFTA corridor system have not been disclosed but could double those figures. Public return on this massive investment will be minimal because, even though the NAFTA corridors will be toll roads, most of the profits will flow to private entities under exclusive development agreements with the various state governments. This move to privatize highways contrasts sharply with the U.S. Interstate Highway System that was built with public money and benefited the nation at large.

Hershey's Moving to Mexico, Cutting 1,500 Jobs

US chocolate maker Hershey's has announced it will be moving 10% of its operations out of the US and cutting 1,500 jobs from its global work force. The three-year restructuring plan will save Hershey's US$190 million per year.

Hershey's Moving to Mexico, Cutting 1,500 Jobs

We are paying huge for the NAFTA Corridors so Hershey can outsource jobs more efficiently to Mexico & import their foreign made goods even cheaper to undercut US business.

If Mexico wants the jobs then they should have to pay for the NAFTA Corridors. After all Mexico only has a 22% debt to GDP ratio. They can afford to barrow to pay for those NAFTA Corridors. We can't barrow because we have a 100% debt to GDP ratio.

Republicans: Free Markets = No bid contracts to your buddies.

Like what just happened in this admin? Window contract to a admin buddy.

You are damn naive if you dont think both parties engage in the practice.

Obama doesn't go around clamoring around about the free markets. Additionally, his war contracting is simply atrocious. He is still pimping out Blackwater and giving money to KBR. I am not naive. I know both parties do this. However, Reps love to preach the free market, yet when they privatize the public sector, it is usually a hand out to their buddies.

I don't want to completely derail this thread as it wasn't my intention. To keep on topic, this looks like a giant handout to the private sector financed by public money. Most likely it will be heralded on in the name of the free market and privatization.
