Dweik's abduction is state terror, pure and simple

It is really hard to think of a single convincing or legitimate reason for the flagrant abduction of Professor Aziz Dweik by Gestapo-like Israeli troops earlier this week.

The 63-year-old Palestinian leader was returning home in Hebron from Ramallah when soldiers manning a roadblock snatched him rather unceremoniously from his car. They handcuffed him as if he were a common criminal.

Dweik is the elected speaker of the Palestinian Legislative Council. He was elected in 2006 in free elections, monitored by many American and European observers, including former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, who testified to their transparency.

Dweik has a long experience of being arrested, mistreated and imprisoned by the Israeli apartheid authorities without charge or trial.

Dweik never hurled stones at anyone. He never indulged in violence, verbal or physical. Yet the Israeli regime, which classified Palestinians into either terrorists who ought to be annihilated or collaborators who are entitled to no respect, couldn't bear seeing the Geography professor speak up against the Israeli occupation, apartheid and oppression.

Israel jails Palestinian parliament speaker without trial
An Israeli military court has ordered the speaker of the Palestinian legislative body to be jailed for six months without trial after he was arrested at a checkpoint last week.

Aziz Dweik, a member of Hamas and a senior elected politician, was imprisoned "without charge or legal justification", a statement from his office said. It claimed Israel was attempting to thwart moves towards reconciliation between the rival Palestinian factions Fatah and Hamas.

The Palestinian Centre for Human Rights said the arrests were a continuation of the targeting of elected politicians affiliated to Hamas, which it viewed as "a retaliatory act and a form of collective punishment" in breach of the Geneva conventions.

He's jailed and being investigated for criminal activities against the state of Israel. He'll likely get out when Israel releases another few thousand like him for one of theirs.

Political Career

Duweik has been associated with The Muslim Brotherhood and Hamas since as early as 1992.

Duweik was careful to dissociate himself from the military actions carried out by Hamas, even though Hamas's early military raids, described as "effective, and deadly," were directed at Israeli occupation forces, not at civilians. In 1992, a separate military wing was established called the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades so that the political wing of Hamas could be distinguished from the military one.

Dweik never hurt anyone. The liars in Israel have no right to kidnap him.

Abbas has security forces in the West Bank numbering about 50,000. About half of the PA's budget goes for security.

And yet the speaker of parliament gets kidnapped off the street with no one to protect him.

What's up with that?
