100 americans killed on our highways every day and yet most americans don't even care. Drug driving and drunk driving are super-violent drug crimes and need to be treated as such. They should be automatic felonies with a 5 year suspension of license.

Drug use now rivals drunk driving as cause of fatal car crashes, study says

sep 30 2015 Drunk drivers have long been the scourge of the roadways, and they still are, but now drivers on drugs are becoming a menace that rivals them, according to a new federal report.

A quadrupling in the use of prescription drugs since 1999, and legalization of marijuana use in some states are cited among the reasons drug use has become an increasing threat to roadway safety, according to a report released today by the Governors Highway Safety Association, an organization of state highway safety officers.

According to the study, drugs were found in the systems of almost 40 percent of fatally injured drivers who were tested for them. That rivals the number of drivers who died with alcohol in their system.

The number of dead drivers who tested positive for drugs has increased from 29 percent in 2005 to 39.9 percent in 2013, the report said, citing federal crash data.

The report draws on federal data again, in this case from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration roadside surveys, as evidence that illegal drug use and the use of prescription medications have increased in the past five years.

The auto industry is behind the legalize pot movement. They want more crashes. Car crashes mean car sales.

What happens in the most drugged out nation on Earth.

Sometimes accidents are just accidents.

Anyone who claims that just because a person was drinking or on drugs when they were involved in an auto accident got into the accident because of that....

...Is a stone cold idiot who has zero capacity to think logically.

BS - 99% of highway crashes are not accidents. They happen because somebody screwed up. Only real accidents are like when a deer runs into your path and you swerve to avoid it and hit something else. THINK

I see you're another of these morons that think if a driver is drunk and texting and speeding and runs over a dozen kids .... that's an accident because he was simply careless and wasn't actually trying to kill anyone. Get help please.

The legalization of pot in many of our states is adding to the toll. Our state has legalized it and I see people smoking a joint while driving fairly frequently. Cops here are now pulling more folks over and "testing" them. Combined with alcohol and prescription drugs driving has gotten to be pretty irratic. Agree with the OP in that those people, if found guilty, should get more time behind bars to contemplate their actions which resulted in a fatality on our highways.
