Draft or NO Draft?

Back in the "old days", and by that I mean in the late 60's, there was a draft and there were those trainees that just couldn't or wouldn't do what they were supposed to. A normal training battalion had four companies of four platoons each (composed of four squads). Each battalion had a fifth platoon called the "goon platoon" composed of the aforementioned individuals. I propose we call the branch you mentioned the GOONS:

G = General
O = Office
O = Organizing
NS = Non-Selectees

Said branch would be responsible for finding useful work in support of the military such as painting rocks, mowing lawns, picking up trash and cleaning latrines.

In less PC times that branch would be called "cannon fodder".

I like it. But let's not forget waxing and buffing floors. Very important.

Goons were called "penal battalions" by the USSR.

Buffing floors is fun, raking lines in gravel and dirt, more fun.

And the Marines are not the Navy's infantry. We are a department of the Navy. That would be De best part. Or De Mens Department. Take your pick. :happy2:

My personal opinion is, and I've thought this for a very long time, that there should be a two year MANDATORY military commitment for EVERYONE. INCLUDING ILLEGAL ALIENS! Hey, if you're here, do it or get the fuck out.

Two years is such a short time, but it would solve ALL our current problems with military staffing.

There should be a mandatory governmental service...some people just are not fit to be military...even if in administrative, non-combat roles.

There should be a military component and a social service component to compulsory service, in my opinion. Those that cannot or will not serve in the military could be used to clean up the city streets, build shelters for the homeless, staff hospital care facilities for the destitute, etc.

It should be tied to educational loans and grants...you don't serve, you are not eligible to receive admittance to any state university, or get a driver's lisence until you are 30.

It's interesting that so many of you support a mandatory term of government service.

That is a very socialist idea.

Now, that does not mean it's a "bad" idea, and there are some implications and consequences that are a concern, but it is nevertheless socialist.

Having said that, I think it would require a constitutional amendment.

Depends on what you mean by flaws. The NSDAP took a bankrupt nation and turned it around into an industrial and military power. Unfortunately the flaw there was the leadership was despotic to the point of insanity.

And I for one would not like living in a nation like that.

Perhaps then you insitute a ruling that if you are unfit for military service you can have a choice of other, "fat-friendly," "homosexual friendly," "conscientious objector-friendly," 2-year service option....i.e. doing all those peacekeeping things that you can do without military support...building village water systems, innoculating children in African villages, etc.
